The internet has a long history of turning real people into meme characters, often reducing entire arguments to a single exaggerated face or catchphrase.

One recent example is "Meximutt," a character derived from a real internet user that has circulated under several names, including "O Algo" and "Mateo."

If you've never seen it before, Meximutt is a character in the broader Soyjak family of Wojak memes and is modeled after "Amerimutt," which similarly uses exaggerated facial features to caricature Americans.

Meximutt's recurring phrase, “o algo,” meaning “or something,” provides a Spanish-language counterpart to Amerimutt's catchphrase.

By late 2026, the meme had also appeared on mainstream social media platforms, particularly TikTok, where it has been adapted for AI videos, surreal memes, ironic shitposting and brainrot content.

But where did "Meximutt" originate, and how did the “o algo” variation spread across social media during the mid-2020s? Here's what we know.

Where Does The 'Meximutt' Meme Come From?

The character was originally associated with imageboard communities, particularly SoyBooru, Soyjak.party and 4chan.

Meximutt originated on SoyBooru and was inspired by a user known as Satoko Yoyo Fan, also called satoko_houjou_fan or Shio, who joined the site on October 9th, 2022, and served as a moderator for a time.

Shio, who identified as Mexican while claiming Germanic ancestry, became a frequent target of ridicule during SoyBooru's “country wars,” in which users represented different nations.

While representing Mexico, he developed a long-running feud with a user known as Italian_Chad. Other users baited Shio with pro-Italy and anti-Mexican memes, anticipating his aggressive responses. His repeated arguments became a source of ridicule, including through the catchphrase “Obsessed brimstone.”

On December 31st, 2023, a user known as Romanian Skipso then shared an edited image mocking Shio. The Soyjak Wiki credits Romanian Schizo, also known as Rosa_Ushiiromiya_Fan and Fatcord, with creating the Meximutt variant by modifying an existing Impish Amerimutt illustration and redrawing it to resemble Shio.

The image subsequently circulated on affiliated and similar sites, including 4chan, as it began spreading into the mid-2020s.

On November 26th, 2025, an anonymous 4chan user posted a Greentext Story about being Mexican that featured the character. The story was reposted to the /r/greentext subreddit that same day under the title “Oh dios mio o algo.”
