Where Did The Catchphrase 'Match My Freak' Come From? Memes Inspired By Tinashe's 'Nasty' Explained
Tinashe's summer hit Nasty has introduced a new viral catchphrase into the cultural zeitgeist; "Is Somebody Gonna Match My Freak?" The question goes beyond jokes about yearning for love or affection and delves straight into how two lovers must rival each other in their wild eccentricity to really connect.
Here's how jokes about Tinashe's song "Nasty" exploded on the internet, from the clip of the Nerdy White Boy Shaking His Hips to the question, Who are two people that actually did match each other's freaks?
Where Does The Line 'Is Somebody Gonna Match My Freak' Come From?
The line comes from American singer Tinashe's "Nasty," a pop song released in April 2024. In the song, Tinashe repeatedly asks, "Is somebody gonna match my freak? Is somebody gonna match my nasty?"
The song first went viral when it was paired with a video of British dancer @nate_di_winer, a rather nerdy-looking man. Nate originally posted his video dancing to a Caribbean song, but it only went viral after someone edited "Is somebody gonna match my freak?" over it.

So 'Who Are Two People Who Actually Did Match Each Other's Freak'?
Twitter (now X) user @hugtulip posed the question in May 2024, receiving a variety of responses, which include Doney from Shrek with his Dragon wife, and the characters from PEN15.
Where Did 'I Like Weird Movies But No One Can Match My Freak' Come From?
As the catchphrase grew more commonplace, more memes began using it to joke about topics beyond Tinashe's song. For instance, X user @lowgradef tweeted an MS Paint drawing of a male and female character discussing horror movies. The two are shown to be thinking about different edgy movies, but one is considerably more egregious than the other.
Later iterations of the meme play on this disconnect, with X user @ozlako joking about how a normal person would just put on some Adam Sandler film, while another user joked about two edgy people liking the Goofy movie.
