Where Did The Phrase 'Oh No! We Suck Again' Come From? The Sports Reaction Meme Explained
In the era of the Zynternet, there are few communities more prolific at spreading memes than sports fans.
But whether it's European soccer (or football) lovers or American NBA junkies, few expressions capture collective despair quite like, "Oh no, we suck again!"
Pulled from Rob Schneider’s iconic line in Adam Sandler's comedy movie The Waterboy, it’s the internet’s shorthand for watching your team botch it so badly, you're you're reconsidering your life choices — like why you ever bought that $90 jersey.
Here's how the meme "Oh No! We Suck Again" became synonymous with the season ticket-holding masochist.
Where Did The Line 'Oh No! We Suck Again' Come From?
The "Oh No, We Suck Again!" meme comes from The Waterboy, a 1998 sports comedy starring Adam Sandler as an unlikely college football hero. The scene shown below shows the line delivered by Rob Schneider’s character, soon after Sandler is kicked off the football team for seemingly making up his high school diploma.
The earliest known use of the meme was a November 26th, 2011, post on the subreddit /r/CFB, also known as the "home of college football" on Reddit. The caption on the post read, "For UVA, GT, Auburn, Ohio St, etc," in reference to all four college teams' lackluster performances that year.
How Did The 'Oh No! We Suck Again' Meme Spread?
The meme began to gain real traction on the internet in 2014 after X user @NFLRT used it following a disastrous game for the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers, who during the 2013 season ended with a winning record and the division title, found themselves with a 3-8-1 record following the loss to the Minnesota Vikings.
The image continued to see usage online in sports communities as it spread further. On June 11th, 2016, an anonymous iFunny user uploaded a picture of LeBron James in his Cleveland Cavalier warm-up outfit, with the picture underneath saying that the team sucks again, as they had just fallen to a 3-1 deficit against the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals. All this, despite the fact that the Cavaliers would later go on to be the first NBA team to reverse 3-1 and actually win.
Over the following years, it would continue to be used with slight edits revolving around sports teams. On May 27th, 2017, Redditor u/Coramoor_ uploaded a variation of the image in which the Columbus Crew SC is photoshopped on top of Rob Schneider's face.
