It's a tagline that has been attached to pictures of duos for years now, but also one that has been tinkered with and edited to bring out exactly how any given pair may try to reel in a potential third. Here's where the meme originated.

Where Did The 'We Saw You From Across The Bar' Meme Come From?

The earliest known use of the phrase "We Saw You From Across The Bar" is a December 2020 post by @nicegirlmeg, who posted a photo of Andy Sanberg and fellow comedian Cristin Milioti with the caption, "'Hey my boyfriend saw you from across the bar and we really dig your vibe. Can we buy you a drink?'"

meg @nicegirlmeg "Hey my girlfriend saw you from across the bar and we really dig your vibe. Can we buy you a drink?"

The implication, of course, was that Andy and Cristin seemed like a couple looking to "spice up" their love lives with the addition of another romantic partner, and whether this mission was bound for success or doomed to failure was unknown.

By 2021, even more outlandish versions of the meme went viral, like one posted by Twitter user @kukukadoo, where a painting of two explorers was captioned, "We saw you from across the bar and we love your vibe. Can we remind you of the ephemerality of all worldly things?"
