Polysecure In The Trash refers to an image of two copies of the book Polysecure by Jessica Fern, a book that purports to help polyamorous couples navigate the challenges of polyamory, in a curbside box of free items. After it was posted to social media in March 2024, many users on Twitter / X and Bluesky joked about how the picture seemed to be evidence of a couple who tried polyamory, failed and broke up.
Origin
On March 19th, 2024, Twitter user @antipsychangel[1] posted an image of two copies of Jessica Fern's Polysecure found in a curbside box of free items, writing, "I hope they're doing okay," seemingly joking about the couple who threw out the books. The tweet gained over 2,100 retweets and 34,000 likes in two days (shown below).
Polysecure is a book by Jessica Fern[2] that mixes philosophy about attachment theory and guides for navigating challenges in polyamorous relationships. The summary in part reads, "Polysecure provides nonmonogamous people with a new set of tools to navigate the complexities of multiple loving relationships and offers radical new concepts that are sure to influence the conversation about attachment theory."
Spread
The image spread on Twitter over the following hours as people joked about it as though it were evidence of a couple who attempted polyamory and failed, leading to their breakup. For example, on March 19th, 2024, Bluesky[3] user Dylynn posted it with the caption, "This is environmental storytelling," earning over 560 reskeets and 2,900 likes in two days (shown below, left).
The same day, Twitter[4] user @lazerwalker also commented that the picture was an example of environmental storytelling, gaining over 150 retweets and 1,700 likes in a similar timeframe (shown below, right)
