A 2015 article by The Sun titled, "We'll Be Having Sex With Robots in the Next 10 Years," has titillated the internet for a while now. And now that 2025 is a week away, the prospect of robot sex partners is almost a reality, according to the original journalist.

It's become a yearly ritual for people to quote tweet the original post, joking about how ready they are for 2025. Maybe next Christmas, women will be ordering Tesla Optimus Bots to fulfill their wildest dreams.

The question at large is: will humans be having sex with robots in 2025? Where did this prediction come from and who started the viral meme? Let's explain.

What's The 'Sex With Robots In 2025' Article?

The original article was published by the British tabloid The Sun in 2015. However, it's since been removed from its website. No matter, you can still read the thing on archive.is.

The piece is mostly an interview with futurologist Dr. Ian Pearson who believed that specialized sex robots would start to appear in ordinary homes in the next decade and that some people would "enthusiastically embrace relationship-free robot sex as soon as they can afford one — as early as 2025."

In 2016, The Sun published an updated version of the article, slightly changing the headline to read, "Women will be having more sex with ROBOTS than men by 2025."

Who Started The 'Sex With Robots In 2025' Meme?

A few years after the original tweet, in July 2018, Twitter user @416Bando quote tweeted The Sun's post, joking, "The Bible says Adam and Eve not Florence and the Machine." The tweet was the first foray into the article's memetic usage and it didn't do too shabby; it received over 399,000 likes.

The post planted a seed in the years to come, as it became a yearly routine to tweet about the promise as 2025 neared. For instance, the first known user to play on the countdown was Twitter user @Bowblax who happily tweeted in 2021, "4 more years until I lose my virginity."

Will We Be Having Sex With Robots In 2025?

In the coming days, expect to see many memes about having sex with robots. Don't be surprised if you see The Sun's headline pop up multiple times throughout the year. It doesn't matter if the prediction comes to fruition, this meme will generate discourse regardless.

However, will we be having sex with robots in the next year?

It's tough to say. Dr. Ian Pearson hasn't been quoted anywhere about the prediction since 2015.

But, there have been plenty of rapid advances in artificial intelligence and robotics since 2015. Many of these advances have ascended rapidly, like the quality of AI art and video. Perhaps if something is announced in January amid all this hype, by the end of the year, robot sex will be a possibility if not totally commonplace.
