Marvel Rivals is an upcoming multiplayer player-versus-player (PvP) shooter featuring an ensemble of memorable Marvel Comics superheroes like Iron Man, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Hulk and many other characters. The video game is being developed by NetEase Games and Marvel Games and a release date has not been confirmed, but the developers promised that a "closed alpha" test will begin in May 2024. Online, clips of the game's first gameplay trailer released in late March 2024 became a viral topic, sparking memes and fan art.

History

On March 26th, 2024, the X^[1] account @MarvelGames posted an image featuring the silhouette of several superheroes, announcing they will reveal a new game developed by NetEase Games on the next day. The post (shown below) amassed over 2,200 likes and 676 retweets in four days.

A trailer of Marvel Rivals^[2] was revealed on March 27th, 2024, which Marvel called a "Super Hero Team-based PVP
Shooter." The trailer^[3] (shown below) amassed over 2 million views and 77,000 likes in three days.

As of late March 2024, the game developers had yet to announce a release date for Marvel Rivals, but the studio promised^[4] that a closed alpha test would begin in May 2024.

Online Presence

As Marvel Rival's first trailer and gameplay were released in late March 2024, fans started to share more details about the game and discuss it on social media. For example, on March 27th, 2024, X^[5] user @Okami13_ posted some of the features and details of the multiplayer Marvel game (shown below), which amassed over 3,800 likes and 528 retweets in three days.

The game's apparent "villain" Galacta caught fans' attention on social media, sparking fan art and memes about the character.

For instance, on March 28th, 2024, X^[6] user @nickromancer21 posted Galacta fan art of the character eating Earth (shown below, left), which amassed more than 32,000 likes and 4,000 retweets in a day. On March 27th, X^[7] user @FineNDanDee posted a Dudes Be Like meme saying Marvel Rivals is a "Galacta propaganda," amassing over 160 likes and 40 retweets in three days (shown below, right).
