San Diego Comic-Con Gifts Fans a Whole Bunch of New Trailers
Comic-Con 50 came and went, and what we're left with is a field of new trailers for the next year or two of upcoming installments in franchises new and old.
We've already looked at the 10 or 11 new projects Marvel will be showering us with in 2020 and 2021. And we've gone back to the future with a look at Terminator: Dark Fate, which is finally bringing back Terminator 2's Edward Furlong and Linda Hamilton on as John and Sarah Connor to the timeline. But that was just the tip of the Comic-Con iceberg. Fans got a look at trailers for Netflix's The Witcher, Star Trek's Picard_, the "Steven Universe":/memes/subcultures/steven-universe/ movie, and much, much more.
DC Comics
With all the hype and fanfare over Marvel comics and their beloved Cinematic Universe, it'd be easy to forget about DC Comics. The home of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman has had a few big successes in the last year or two, but it's done little to stop the clobbering Marvel has been giving DC in the realm of film.
Nevertheless, DC announced a slate of new projects that should please fans. First up, Batman Beyond, the much-heralded animated sequel to Batman: The Animated Series, is finally getting a high-def re-release on October 29th, 2020. According to Polygon, "All 52 episodes of the series are included, but only 41 are fully remastered; the other 11 were irreparably damaged in the intervening decades, and had to be 'uprezzed' from older files."
Doom Patrol, which has been quietly building hype on DC's streaming platform, is getting a big push as DC teams up with HBO for season two. HBO will also be releasing the critically-lauded season one of the series on its upcoming streaming service HBO Max.
Speaking of HBO, we finally got a real look at the upcoming Damon Lindelof Watchmen series. While we're left guessing what role this show plays into the timeline of the Watchmen comic series, we can only assume that it happens simultaneously, like all of history according to Dr. Manhattan, whose appearance is teased throughout the trailer. If the show is half as good as Lindelof's adaptation The Leftovers, then we will be the one who watches the Watchmen.
Finally, DC gave fans a look at the upcoming Harley Quinn animated series. Paired with Joan Jett's cover of the Mary Tyler Moore theme "Love Is All Around," Harley Quinn and its trailer looks like a NSFW blast for fans looking for a hard-R version of the character.
Snowpiecer
Fans of Korean director and Palm d'Or winner Bong Joon-Ho's 2014 post-apocalyptic class-war romp Snowpiercer got a look at the TV adaptation this weekend. The series, which premieres on TBS in 2020, stars Jennifer Connelly and Daveed Diggs in an adaptation by Orphan Black co-creator Graeme Manson. TBS must be feeling confident because the expensive-looking series has already been greenlit for a second season.
His Dark Materials
Speaking of TV, HBO plans to replace Game of Thrones with another popular fantasy series based on a beloved book: His Dark Materials. The HBO's is another try at the series, following 2007's The Golden Compass, adding Lin-Manuel Miranda and James McAvoy and riding the popularity of young adult fiction to entice audiences.
Picard
Star Trek fans finally got what they've been waiting for their whole lives: a series about an 80-year-old Jean-Luc Picard. Sir Patrick Stewart is reprising the role that made him a household name in the Next Generation sequel series that will reunite him with series stars Brent Spiner and Jonathan Frakes, who will return as Data and Riker, respectively.
The Witcher
After much fan speculation and a whole host of memes, we finally got to see Netflix's adaptation of The Witcher in action. How does it look? Well, it looks like Game of Thrones. That doesn't mean it's a bad thing. Netflix is clearly putting all their money on the screen in what appears to be a no-expense-spared adaptation of the series. At the very least, Henry Cavill no longer looks like Orlando Bloom's Legolas.
Steven Universe: The Movie
Finally, Cartoon Network has delivered a full trailer for the Steven Universe movie, which will air on September 2nd, 2019 on Cartoon Network. Not much to say about it except that it looks delightful.
