Welcome to the weekend roundup, where the trending memes of the past weekend are rounded up and examined more closely. This past weekend was the start of the Olympics and people facing the consequences of their actions.

On the Olympic front, the 2020 Summer Tokyo Olympics started off with many wonderful moments happening in the opening ceremony, which, if you missed it, means waiting until the ceremony is allowed to go on YouTube before you can catch up. In "consequences of your actions" case one, Kevin Smith is learning what happens when you give decades-long fans of a franchise their own No Man's Sky moment in animated form thanks to Netflix's Masters of the Universe reboot. The last bit of online chatter was about Blizzard Entertainment who have found themselves in a growing controversy surrounding their internal office culture.

2020 Summer Tokyo Olympics

2020 Summer Tokyo Olympics refers to the Olympic games that were postponed by a year due to COVID-19. The games were able to officially start on July 23rd, but with a bit of a difference to them. The games themselves do not have any fans in the stands, and online broadcast rules make it very restrictive to show replays, highlights and the posting of any photos and videos on social media. These restrictive rules were best shown through the testimony of Tony Hawk who was kicked out of the skateboard area for taking pictures of the competitors. What few moments people were able to post on social media and talk about, were turned into memes and discussed online with voracity.

Blizzard Entertainment is facing continual difficulties this month. First Asmongold acts as the literal catalyst for the greatest decline in Blizzard hype and the greatest increase in FFXIV players ever. Secondly, the state of California decides to sue Activision-Blizzard for how they treat their female employees, which is with prejudice, leading to a lot of outcry from players and former employees of the company. Not to be complete with the destruction of the company itself, several of the chief executives and the former CEOs have come out to admit fault, with a thousand current employees signing a letter saying that the way things have been handled is atrocious.

Masters Of The Universe: Revelation

Masters Of The Universe is the name of the He-Man and She-Ra franchise. The recent trouble is with the He-Man franchise however, which has had a large upswell of criticism lobbed at Kevin Smith for creating the Netflix adaptation of He-Man in which expectations are once again, subverted. According to fans and critics, everything that made the previous decades of the He-Man franchise is no longer part of the Netflix adaptation — so it's no surprise that memes spawned among the recent controversy.
