What's Christmasposting And Jollyposting? Let's Explain Why Christmas Memes And GIFs Are Everywhere

Christmas memes and GIFs have taken over social media, all part of a weird but festive trend known as Christmasposting or Jollyposting.

These memes have crudely-added Christmas symbols added to them like trees, snow, Santa hats and presents. Plus, many Christmas words are inserted like "joy" and "jolly," alluding to the Christmas spirit hidden in every meme.

However, where did this trend start and why has it taken over TikTok, Twitter / X and the rest of social media? Let's explain.

Where Did Christmasposing And Jollyposting Start?

Christmasposting started on Twitter last month when a user named @supersylvie_ asked their followers, "can we just make these stupid christmas versions of every gif now?" They attached the Regular Show GIF shown above which recaptioned the Impact text to read, "Your Mom's a Grinch!"

The tweet inspired other meme creators and artists to add to the trend, repurposing notable reaction GIFs with Christmas signifiers.

Christmasposting is reminiscent of two precursor trends that also use the "-posting" suffix. The first happened earlier this year, known among meme circles as Alienposting. In these memes, extraterrestrial symbols are added to pre-existing templates, similar to Jollyposting.

After Alienposting came Pirateposting which peaked sometime in April this year. This time, instead of chaotic, outer space visuals, pirate talk and anti-landlubber symbols were added to every meme.

What's Jollyposting On TikTok?

After the initial bunch of Christmasposts landed on Twitter, the trend spread across social media, gaining reposts and original memes on sites like Instagram and TikTok.

In turn, video memes were added to the growing trend. This allowed creators to insert famous Christmas carols and songs, making Mariah Carey defrost at an exponential rate.

TikTokers started calling the trend "Jollyposting" by using a hashtag to separate their videos from the others. Many inserted the phrase "Christmas spirit" into their memes to further their chance of the algorithm noticing them.
