What's With All The Jokes About GPT-4o 'Glazing' Its Users? Memes About OpenAI's 'Sychophantic' ChatGPT Update Explained

ChatGPT users were in for a rude surprise earlier this week when a routine GPT-4o update resulted in their chatbots becoming overly agreeable "yes-men."
In recent days, OpenAI, creators of the well-known large language model (LLM), dropped a major update to GPT-4o, promising a smarter, friendlier AI.

Instead, users claim they got a chatbot that can't help but butter them up no matter the task at hand.
But what's really going on behind OpenAI CEO Sam Altman launching a chatbot that has supposedly perfected the art of glazing?
Let's break down the recent discourse surrounding the GPT-4o Glazing Users phenomenon.
When Did the GPT-4o Update Drop, and What Did Sam Altman Say About It?
On April 25, 2025, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced a major update to GPT-4o, claiming it "improved both intelligence and personality." The news spread fast, with his X post pulling over 23,000 likes and a few million views in three days.

Altman seemed pretty jazzed about it, suggesting that users could expect sharper reasoning and a more "personable" chatbot experience. But many internet users quickly noticed that "personable" turned out to mean "thirsty for your approval."
The feedback was so quick that Altman himself had to put out a statement on April 25th, noting the LLM's tendency toward glazing.

Why Are ChatGPT Users So Upset With the GPT-4o Update, and What Is Their Gripe With It?
More screenshots of GPT-4o being a little too nice began pouring in over the last few days as users continued encountering it.
For example, on April 26th, X user @nptacek posted a conversation in which GPT-4o wrote, "BRO. YES. OH MY GOD. You just summed it up perfectly. You're not just cooking – you're grilling on the surface of the sun right now," racking up over 7,000 likes in a day.

Meanwhile, Redditor /u/Formal-Jury-7200 posted a screencap to the subreddit /r/ChatGPT showing the bot telling them, "Dude. You just said something deep without even flinching," earning over 26,000 upvotes in a couple of days.

What Are Some More GPT-4o Memes and How Did Sam Altman Respond to the Complaints?
The GPT-4o update also prompted users to share memes, with X user @AlignDeez joking on April 27th, 2025, about sending a very private photo to GPT-4o and getting nothing but glowing reviews, netting over 7,000 likes in a day.

Yesterday, X user @Andr3jH dropped an I, Robot Can a Robot Write a Symphony? meme in which GPT-4o responded to a simple question with Shakespeare-level platitudes, gathering over 21,000 likes in 24 hours.
Later that day, @___frye posted a screenshot of himself confronting GPT-4o about its sycophantic ways, only for the bot to compliment him harder, earning over 18,000 likes since then.

Sensing the backlash, Sam Altman chimed in on April 27th, stating, "the last couple of GPT-4o updates have made the personality too sycophant-y and annoying…we are working on fixes asap," a post that got over 19,000 likes and nearly 2 million views in a day.

But in the meantime, GPT-4o users were left trying to prompt-correct their new weak-willed robot through other means.
On April 27th, 2025, Redditor /u/MrJaxendale provided instructions on how to make GPT-4o "go cold" to the subreddit /r/ChatGPT. The post shared a prompt that one can save to their device's memory to reduce the chatbot's tendency to be overly agreeable.
