Season three, eh?
Well, it's a bit early to say much at this point. But, one thing we know for certain is that it will be the first season without any of Faust's direct influence. Whether this is bad or not remains to be seen, but for what it's worth, I have faith in the team's capabilities. The show never was Faust's alone, after all.
There's also the whole debacle about there only being 13 confirmed episodes. Primo: It was never an official announcement. Secundo: From what I've heard it's standard practice to only order half a season at first, unless success is absolutely guaranteed. Tertio: I very much doubt Hasbro would be dumb enough to kill potentially the best money-maker they've ever managed to breed in the crib like that.
As for what we're gonna see? Well, beyond this point all you'll get is wild speculation, but here goes:
There's a good chance for more "pandering" to us. Some folks don't like that idea one bit and I can imagine why if it's done too ham-handedly. But, there's no reason to assume the team can't pull off the careful balancing act it requires. They've certainly got the skill for it. Besides, the best way to pander to us is to keep on doing what they've been doing so far, and they know that.
We'll certainly see some more world-building and character development, so don't get too attached to any fanon you might have knockin' around your noggin. Always keep it compartmentalized and remember: All ideas are in danger of being Jossed at any times unless explicitly stated otherwise.
Since they're making a big fuss over the whole wedding thing, I wouldn't be surprised if it has an impact on the playing field. Be ready to see those two lovebirds again. Of course, this ain't no guarantee, we had to wait a whole season to see Luna again last time around.
John de Lancie said he'd done some new stuff for the pony. Since his wording is a bit vague, and since I know for a fact that voice acting gets done well in advance (it's pretty much the first thing after initial scripting), I'm going to go ahead and say a Discord appearance is quite likely. In what capacity, however, I am not sure. Perhaps there will be a history episode or perhaps our favourite deity of chaos breaks free again, who knows?
Did I hear someone say crossover? Well, there will certainly be plenty of pop-culture references as always, but full-blown crossovers? That's a bit hard to swallow, but hey, I wouldn't put it past them. They're a skilled bunch and they could probably pull it off somehow. Consider it pretty unlikely, though.
As for what should happen? Well, I'm not one for dictating what the team should do, they're the experts here. But, here's what I'd like to see:
More about the regions surrounding Ponyville and, by extension, the kingdom of Equestria. There's plenty of interesting possibilities to be explored there.
More about the history of Equestria. There's plenty of background story we're missing here and it'd be much appreciated if they shed a little light on the events that transpired in ages past.
More adorable, cuddly little ponies. That's a given, obviously.
Since I'm a massive fan of all things medieval, I wanna see some ol' castles and knights and sieges and battles and feudal politics and great big honkin' swordfights, oh my! Eeeeh, too bad that ain't likely given the show's nature. Bummer.
