Obligatory pony

I'll be seeing it on the midnight release, like last year when I saw the first Hobbit, And like before, I am going to regret staying up for 30+ hours, with School the next morning, and Work until midnight that friday night, but its ALL worth it.

It probably wasn't a page get, some other guy ended up getting it (probably Jimmy or Kewln00b) so RandomMan killed him.

Well that's gorgeous and fantastic and destined to be crushed by Hasbro's copyright trolls.

MOAR!

:)

Well, after months of not being able to watch as much poni as I wish I could (literally like an episode every week or two) after being able to rewatch all these episodes due to….Umm being off of work and social life for the last month. I came to a conclusion I have long forgot about……..Fluttershy is HNNNNNNNNNNG inducing. Just everything about her has been making me fanboy lately, so now I hereby name Fluttershy best Pone of the day. Until tomorrow when I re-realize just how adorkable Twilight can be.

Oh ho ho ho! Look at that! She really loves those books! She's so adorkable. I hereby name Twilight Sparkle best Pone of the day!

FLAME_SHIELDS == TRUE

I hated the new Button Mash video. Before you crucify me, I just wanna say my reasons.

First of all, lets talk about why we loved the Button's Adventures pilot:

  • Very smart and clever humor; innocent, yet relevant to mature tastes.
  • Likable, believable characters. Button seemed to have a lot of not-yet-ventured-into personality. It seemed as if the pilot episode was building up to some serious character development.
  • It was clearly trying to avoid any media throw-ins, it just relied on a very classic style of humor like you would expect from MLP: FiM itself.

Now, lets talk about why I didn't like the new video:

  • It did nothing to boost Button's character. You could have removed Button altogether and the video would have been no different.
  • It was another freakin' Minecraft parody video. It was exactly like the hundreds of other ones. This made it seem like it cared more about appealing to the average internet 10 year old, instead of following the unique style of humor it built in the first video.
  • The fact that it was a song in the first place. Not to mention, the song's practically dated now. It also seemed like it was trying to appeal to more 10 year olds by parodying a Katy Perry song. I have yet to see one of these videos that parody something along the lines of, say, Bohemian Rhapsody. Better yet, just remove the whole song part altogether, and instead make it focus more on actual spoken dialogue.

The animation was fantastic though, so I can't complain about that.

Anyways, yeah, I'm probably gonna get downvoted to oblivion with this from people saying "ur just a trol tryyng to mak us mad!!1", but this is my honest opinion. You can like the video if you want to, but this is my input.

@RD101

I think it's a bad idea to think of the music video as another installment in the Button's Adventures series, mainly because it has been in development long before the series started. Here's an animatic that Jan posted all the way back in April – a little less than a month after he posted the promo for the Button series:

It's better to look at it as an offshoot of the "Ask the CMC"-verse, since that's where he introduced the Button/Sweetie toyship which is at the basis of the video. In that light, I don't think that the criticism that it doesn't advance Button's character is all that valid.

As for the song and the video, I don't really know what you mean when you say that it's "exactly like the hundreds of other" Minecraft videos. How many of these show-quality animated pony music videos about Minecraft are there, exactly?

As for the song, it is indeed based on a parody of an old Katy Perry song, and in fact recycles a parody song that came out all the way back in 2012, but I don't think that this is as big of a problem as you make it seem. Old stuff being reconfigured and put to new use is basically the bread-and-butter of internet culture. If we look, for example, at the Nyan Cat entry we can see that the famous video is actually a construct of a new gif put over a song that had been around for a year prior to it. And look also at the recent Pony Anthology video, which is borrowing its format from AMV Hell – a video that's seven years old, and which is basically nothing but people taking old stuff and editing it into a new context to humerous effect. And yet nobody complains. Jan, in taking the old parody song, tweaking it, and adding his own animation, did basically the same thing, and in the process made a totally new video. Can we really be mad at him for following the lead of some of the most notable bits of recent internet culture?

If there was ever a case for Fair Use, it would be that.

>hand drawn animation + humanizations = enough transformative value to make a US District Judge blush
>no profits. Always a necessity in fan works and a large factor in Fair Use
>educational value. Sadly, the one factor of Fair Use that's almost never at play in fan works, including this one.
>criticism/parody. Toss in some allegory and jokes and you're set.

There's also the fact that Hasbro has yet to DMCA original animations.

@RD101
1) It wasn't an "episode" of Button's Adventure, it was a music video.
2) Fan parodies of music and music videos are as old as the fandom itself.
3) People enjoy Minecraft. Jan wanted to do something people enjoy, see the connection? Just because someone does something that a lot of people enjoy doesn't mean they're trying to appeal to the Least Common Denominator. It does most likely mean you're a hipster, though.
4) Animations take a very long time to do. No matter what song he did, it would appear "dated."
5) Again, music video. Off course there's not going to be any character development or plot in a music video.

Sorry to butt in this seemingly beautiful argument, but I can't stop watching this! It's just too cute!

Let me just die of diabetes now.

We actually have a meme entry for that song. The only thing is that it's three years old, and not really up to the current standard. But still, it's there!

It's from an anime called Macross Frontier. Here's the scene:

After months of laboring, stressing, and (at least in my case) drinking away sorrow, Fifths and I have finally finished our latest animation project: Take a Bow, almost four minutes of Vinyl Scratch and Octavia goodness. It's quite a bit overdue, but we're both really pleased with the results. Thanks to DeadParrot for his vector prowess; the vectors in the outdoor shot were clutch.

Enjoy.

And I helped!

(Awesome job, guys! Congrats on the final release! Glad I could play even a minor role in such a fun project!)

@Derpy's Nyan Dance
Pretty sure that was my favorite part of the anthology!
In all honesty, Anthology was more miss than hit for me.
The whole concept is very reference-heavy and when you aren't familiar with the source material (like I wasn't with at least half of the clips), they just don't land the way they were intended.
My favorite parts were the custom animations like Derpy up there and this:

Mac's Quest kicks ass!

@Don't Mine at Night
First off, I pretty much agree with everything Platus said o the subject.
This was an off-shoot of the CMC ask-blog more than a continuation of Button's Adventures as evidenced by the fact that Minecrafting Sweetie Belle has been a long-running theme for the tumblr.

But I do want to add that I think DMaN actually does advance Button's character despite being just a music video.
Up until now, he's had only very minor characterization based entirely on the one animation.
He was basically a silly little video game-obsessed kid prone to childish outbursts.
Now I loved Button's Adventures and look forward to more in the future, but that really was just about all there was to it, even if it was presented in an extremely entertaining manner.

DMaN did more, though.
The song is a whole character arc contained in just a few short minutes.
We learn that Sweetie's crush on Button is actually reciprocated and that Button is apparently fiercely loyal to her, even when it is to his own detriment.
He loses hours of time and effort but still rushes back in to protect her time and time again.
Yeah, it's all presented in the form of a comedy/parody music video, but saying that it doesn't show a new side to his character is missing a big part.

Related Facts of the Day: I have never played Minecraft nor seen The Hobbit yet.
I should really get around to that…

So for anyone who cares, that was my first attempt at composing electronic music. The experience was…hmm…interesting to say the least.

Let me put it like this: This is me composing regular music

This is me composing dubstep

I'll watch the video later when I've woken up a bit more, but I just want to say that I've always liked the Pony models that you use. They just look even more adorable than normal….and you're not just taking the easy way out by downloading show accurate flash puppets or anything.

And it's nice to see that I'm not the only one that agrees with their ponies looking way too adorable.

vintiezre wrote:

Whoa! How did you predict it was going to be featured?

@ Animation
Bravo, gentlemen! I truly applaud your fine work. Congrats on the feature!

Well, let's just say the fact that it was featured was an 'inside job'. We stick together for our fellow Pony thread posters.

Also for the fact that EQD usually features animations as long as they don't look like something I'd make (unless it was a joke video). So combine cute ponies, animation that doesn't look like an episode of Johnny Test (AKA, god awful) and plenty of emails that say "If you don't feature this I will fucking rip your nuts off Seth." and you've got yourself a featured video.

Also, I finally saw the video. It's definitely going to be one of my favorite pony animations. Don't know if that's because I don't really like Pony fanimations except for a VERY select few, or if it's just because I can sit there and go "Yeah, the three guys that made that video? Yeah, we're all pretty tight." or some unknown third reason which is probably the fact that I can't stop obsessing over how cuddle worthy these ponies look.

I can't think of any clever way to put this so I'm just going to come out and say it: Some Russians found "Take a Bow" and dubbed it over.

They chopped some of my music out from the middle, but I don't even give a shit. Just…wow…my writing has officially been translated into the Russian language.

AAAAAAAND they translated it within 24 hours. Congrats, you have peaked. It's all downhill from here, only thing you can do now is enjoy the ride. Now get to work on another fanimation guys, chop chop, I demand it.

Oh snap! Russia's got a hold of it. You're basically Steven Spielberg now. Everyone's gonna know about this. Here, I found a theme song:

(But seriously, that's pretty awesome. You guys did a great job and people are noticing. Good for you!)

@Fifths

Happy Russian debut!

Gotta say, of all the things that I thought might have happened, having the video re-voiced by Russian guys was not high on the list of expected outcomes!

(By the way, check the comments. Someone caught on to your credits music! And a postive review from the guy who drew the Derpy Nyan video right on this very page!)

And since this whole page seems to be dedicated to animations, have a silly one:

Compromise: Grumpy dancing!

Now for a different type of animation:

Uh-oh guys, I think Tara knows us too well.

It's been awhile… But I have once again found some part of my drawings that I'm not confident in… Which has come about because I need to draw something that doesn't fit into standard Pony Drawing conventions…

…Because It's an attempt to make the Leo Ponyscope look like she is indeed part Lion instead of just wearing a costume.

So… Um… Is something wrong with her face or not?

@Lunar Protege

Nope, can't say there's anything that needs fixing. You could consider covering the back of her neck with some more mane, though, but that's just my opinion.

Damn, I've been meaning to do some drawing myself for months now, and I just can't seem to ever end up doing it. Such is the curse of laziness, I suppose.

On a somewhat tangentially pony-related note, one of my favourite bands released a new album a while ago. One of the songs is about unicorns. Incidentally, I can't stop listening to it.

@Lunar

Reminds me of Tom (From Tom and Jerry, not the rock)

@Fifths and Exudes animation

Got around to seeing this. I have to say I'm jealous that you guys are going out there and delivering. I wish I had the time to make shit. Be it vectors or music.

Needless to say, you guys did great and I love seeing people coming together to produce something great.

I can’t think of any clever way to put this so I’m just going to come out and say it: Some Russians found “Take a Bow” and dubbed it over.

The fact that the animation got a Russian dub in less than a day is an incredible bonus on topic of the delivery cake! That is incredible!

Mares speaking with manly russian voices is even more incredible.

Take it as a good sign. Your work was good enough that even the nation that gives no fucks actually gave a fuck

They chopped some of my music out from the middle, but I don’t even give a shit. Just…wow…my writing has officially been translated into the Russian language.

I see what they did here. The replaced the tune you made with an actual dubstep song.

The music you originally made sounded more like chiptune/MIDI and not dubstep. I guess they felt they needed to "correct" that.

That's a shame. You created the first Vinyl animation ever where Vinyl experimented with something else other than dubstep and I was liking that idea

Oh well, don't feel like you messed something up there. It's not like the music you made had to be perfectly accurate to the fanon concept of what Vinyl makes

@RD101 Listen man, I just have to say this. You keep saying "You're going to downvote me and I don't care." but really, if you didn't mention all that shit by going "TURNING ON FLAME SHIELDS! I AM READY TO BE DOWNVOTED!!!!" I'm pretty sure you wouldn't get downvoted. We all share unpopular opinions down here and we never get downvoted for that. But what you're doing is basically like walking into a room full of people and going "I hope you guys don't get pissed off or anything but I think Hitler was onto something back then." I swear to god you wouldn't get downvoted if you didn't open and end your posts with "DOWNVOTE ME ALL YOU WANT PUSSIES! MUWAHAHAHAHAHA"

@Brownmane and Blue Screen of Death

Thank you for telling me that I didn't screw up somehow. It's nice to know I'm not a total failure.

Though… In the last few hours since moving on from that image I have rediscovered an old Foe…

…Hands…

In otherwords I've Progressed about 75% of the way through the Zodiac to Sagittarius and I know it's highly improbable for me not to screw something up.

The lack of Mane/Tail is because I should really be going to sleep and the Mane and Tail are the most complicated parts.

Thank you in advance everyone.

Now… I'll go make myself a cup of hot Chocolate.

@Lunar Protege

Yeah, this one needs quite a bit of work.

She's lacking shoulders. The fact that the collar of her shirt settles so high exacerbates the problem by making it appear she has no shoulder to speak of.

The arms are a bit long compared to her total height, and the visible forearm is disproportionately skinny compared to the upper arm.

Yeah, hands are a real pain in the arse, one every artist knows all too well. The fingers here are alright, though perhaps the thumb is a little too prominent. Consider hiding it behind the hand a bit more. Also, the palm is awfully round, needs sharper edges and a flatter surface.

That there's one long crotch. Either make the legs longer or the hips smaller and placed higher (or a bit of both), it's currently rather badly proportioned.

Don't beat yourself too hard over not being perfect, by the way. I'm something of a perfectionist, so I don't even try to art if I'm not feeling 100% confident in myself at a given moment. Consequently, I don't art a whole lot and my skills stagnate, even deteriorate. That's a real death-knell for an artist, so keep on drawing.

@Kewln00b: Of all the pony animatics from SDCC, that was definitely the one I was looking forward to the most (well, other than the Nightmare Moon one)

I know what you mean, watching the animatics was a great time. It's like they knew the four scenes that would make me fanboy the most and combined them all into a very unfinished sequence. Of all scenes that made me fanboy the most were this and the Scootaloo scene (Oh no, I just spoiled the entire season for everyone! Oh no!!!)

vintiezre said:

I secretly control all the pony sites, picking exactly which content each site has. EQD, Fimfiction, and /mlp/ are all under my domain. Seth, Knighty, and Scruffy are all mere puppets, there to give people the illusion of fandom celebrities and drama.

Kewln00baloo said:

You mean the one that says if you follow and stalk your idol, they'll eventually buckle and write you into their story? Yikes, sounds like we're going to be getting a new Dateline special: "Friendships Forever: The Story of One Pony Fanatic's Deadly Obsession."

@Brownmane

Thanks, that's a fair bit of easy fixes. Here we go:

I'm not sure where you're saying the squareness of the hands needs to go though…

The ironic thing that I got the impression of when I made the forearm thicker and shorter though was that she basically now feels shorter… I guess? I just seem to kind of expect thicker arms on shorter characters in much the same sense as one expects a Dwarf to be strong.

I'm not sure that's a bad thing though.

Edit: Damn, just remembered she's supposed to have pegasus wings… Forgot about that part.
Edit 2: Ironically Pegasus wings are harder than Bat Pony wings… Despite being more commonly drawn by everyone but me.
