Not to be a party pooper, but this page is going to become hard to load if everyone embeds everything. The music general thread ran into this problem. Keep it one embed per post and link the rest.

Also, not that I like this guy, but thoughts on the new album? I haven't heard anything except parts of the songs on YT yet. So far this is the only one I can partially stand.

I really like a lot of Skrillex's old stuff. As time went on though it got repetitive….. and then it got weird. I tried listening to the new albums and I just can't do it.

oh I see. ._.

We already have a music thr-

….

You know what? I give up.

Just promise me you guys, you will only use one video embed per post. If this thread begins to chug, I will start removing embeds from people's posts and replace them with links whether OP likes it or not. Too many embeds will wreck the page, just like it wrecks every music thread.

@Panda

I’ll be interested to see how much hate this thread gets.

Probably not as much as you hope. We've got plenty of dubstep listeners here. Myself included.

The only thing I don't like in dubstep is too much gimmicks, grating, scratching and distortion (which I am disappointed to see a lot of in this thread. So there you go: imma haytin). Plus dubstep that isn't bass heavy will deeply offend me.

But there's plenty of decent quality dubstep that shows some real class and some proper bass

@Cute Master

I've noticed some improvements on his part this time around, but he's still pleb tier dubstep.

Still rocking the chipmunk voices and the squealing I see?

@Sandstone

I miss Spor. I really do. He’s doing that shit Feed Me house stuff now. Like there’s no bite to it. But hey, this remixed track is pretty good. Original is still the best.

Ah, something more my style. I much prefer dubstep that stays true to the genre rather than trying to be party rock.

Yea, it sucks that Spor gave up on their former styles to pursue more of the same typical house crap. I tried listening to Feed Me and it just sounded so…ordinary. Completely generic. Why they dived into that oversaturated market where nobody can distinguish them from other house producers was beyond me. In fact we've lost a lot of good DnB/Dubstep artists thanks to the money call of House. Pendulum did the same thing. All the old stuff was best. (Geez, I sound like the dubstep equivalent of a geewunner)

My favorite dubstep producers? Bulletproof and Optimus Gryme

Grymes remix of System is probably one of the best dubstep tracks I have ever heard.

Now were fucking talking. Soul. Energy. Depth. Power. Bass. No chipmunks, no rappers, no grinding, no screeching and no gimmicks

See dubstep is more than party noise. It can also be calm and soothing or dark and tragic. I've got a large collection of dubstep made by different artists to really explore with the genre beyond the rave scene

I'm totally with Blue Screen here. I do like dubstep, but not the type that just sticks a bunch of aggressive noises to a simple 140bpm beat. Dubstep was originally about creating an atmosphere; typically one that's both spacious and unnerving. The 'wubs' that people talk about tend to be added artificially as an actual 'wub' sound in the mids these days, while it used to refer to the oscillating sub-basslines that dubstep was essentially based around.

Here's a history lesson, from 2006:

Note the following:

  • Thick, oscillating sub-bass that carries the song
  • Interesting beat, rather than just kicksnarekicksnare
  • No obnoxious synths, screeches, grinding noises, etc

That said, a lot of early dubstep was kinda dull and/or irritating, but at least it was still experimenting and evolving back then.

I don't actually have all that much dubstep in my music library, mostly because I figured out that drum and bass tends to have a bit more depth and energy to it. The dubstep I do regularly listen to tends to be more chillstep oriented:

Blackmill – Embrace

Sadly, there aren't many producers out there who do a decent job of it. Either that or they're just really good at hiding.

It's not Dubstep, it is Glitch Hop. It's a good song, but it's not relevant.

Should I change the title of the thread to "The EDM Thread"? :P

There are two issues with that:

  • You probably won't be seeing anywhere near as much dubstep in it. I'll probably be posting a bunch of D&B songs, and I know of a few people on this site who are really into trance and/or house. It'll likely end up as a bunch of separate conversations going on at once in the same thread.

I suppose that, considering the age of the last EDM thread, we could maybe just do with making a fresh one. Call it 'EDM General 2: Electric Boogaloo' or something.

Here's some heavier dubstep that I like:

deadmau5 + Noisia. I know. Not the sort of acts you'd expect to mix for any reason, but it sorta works. (And yes, I know that Noisia are signed to mau5trap)

hahaha. catchy.

I've got no problem with restoring the former EDM General to it's former glory and making EDM General 2. I really liked the EDM topic. If people want, I can either revive that old thread or convert this one.

If we convert this thread, you better like Trance and DnB because I'll be posting that here if we do.

If we revive the old thread, I'll lock and redirect this one.

Or we can just stick with posting Dubstep here. Up to you guys

Another one of my favorite bass nukes in the dubstep field:

Turn your subwoofer up plz. If you don't have one, go get one.

Oh god Dennis don't tell me you're one of those people who think's there's really a difference
Listen to that song and tell me it's fucking really glitchpop or stitchstep, you know those are just fuckin made up subgenres that don't actually sound different from dubstep
You wouldn't really think it's a country song if it said it was, because I'm pretty damn sure that's a fucking dubstep song

Why am I getting so worked up over this goddamn you Dennis you have released the demons

Whoa. Sorry man. It's just that it has a faster BPM. Other than that, yeah. It's dubstep.

Sorry, but I'm gonna have to be one of 'those guys'.

Arbitrarily dividing music up into an annoyingly large amount of sub-genres is a bit of a pain for things like rock and metal, but it's necessary for EDM. The reason is that it's intended to be incorporated into DJ sets, where the beat structure and tempo are really important. Glitch Hop and Dubstep might sound similar in terms of the synths, but one works at about 110bpm while the other is about 140bpm, and one has (roughly) hip-hop beats while the other just goes 'kick, snare, kick, snare'. Try to mix them together in a DJ set, and you're in for trouble (unless you're really good).

If you think it's ridiculous to point out the difference between glitch hop and dubstep, then you haven't seen nothin' yet:

It sounds like dubstep. Has the screechy synths, the kick-snare pattern, both contributing artists are extremely well known for their dubstep, and yet it isn't dubstep. It's 'drumstep', which is technically a sub-genre of drum and bass. The only reason for this is that it's around 174bpm, which means you can incorporate it into a drum and bass set but not a dubstep set. It seems dumb, but if you're a DJ with a library of several thousand songs and you're trying to improvise a dubstep set, the last thing you want is to load up a drumstep song by mistake, so you tag it 'drum and bass' instead.

What can be irritating is when people divide things like 'dubstep' or 'drum and bass' further. I can understand distinguishing between dubstep, brostep and chillstep, but I have no idea what the hell 'clownstep' is supposed to be. Within drum and bass, the lines between techstep, darkstep and neuro are very poorly defined, and yet you'll still see people arguing about which sub-genre a particular song fits into in YouTube comments.

(Also, if you like Glitch Hop, I really love this song)

I’m up for converting this thread.

OP has spoken.

This is now EDM thread. All EDM genres are now game for this thread. Discuss all and everything EDM.

Have some Nero

This song needs to be longer. 6 minutes doesn't do it justice

@projectEndo

Listen to that song and tell me it’s fucking really glitchpop or stitchstep

I listened to it and it is Glitch Pop

Dubstep has a solid definition and that definition includes not being above a certain BPM. It can have the same synths as any other genre but the drum pattern is what makes the genre. If I can't hear the dubstep drum pattern, it's not dubstep.

Maybe you can be dismissive of subgenres within the same genre. Because people love making taking their own style and calling it a whole genre, which is total bullshit

But the categorization of EDM by beat is important. You cannot ignore it for genre's with their own defined patterns.

you know those are just fuckin made up subgenres that don’t actually sound different from dubstep

Yea, people do that. But Glitch pop is not a subgenre of dubstep. Neither is drumstep. Make sure you do your research on what makes and defines the EDM genre's before you make such claims on youtube and start a comment flamewar

We can post any sort of EDM now?

Quick, post drum and bass before OP changes his mind!

I fucking love this song. I can't get over how chilled it is, and the video that SuicideSheep set to it is simply stunning. It's also surprisingly nice to mix with. With the ambient outro, you can easily transition from this to just about anything you want (provided it's in a somewhat similar key), and it's the perfect song to end a set.

For those who think it's a little too chilled, there's a neuropop remix. What's neuropop? Hell if I know, but I'm gonna post it anyway.

Good, finally a thread where I can post some Electronic House.

Cannonball was just a so-so hit in my opinion, regardless of how popular it managed to become earlier this year, but the Earthquake remix just does it justice. Fits well.

Then again, for some reason Electronic House with vocals just does a good job lately imo.

Yay everything EDM thread because I've run out of synchronisieren schritt that I actually enjoy.

This song really set the tone of the whole movie near the beginning. Pump Panel did a really good job of remixing this track and it just fit right into the whole scene at the beginning of the flick. Actually Blade had a lot of good electronica tracks if I remember correct.

Last edited Apr 11, 2014 at 09:58AM EDT

I already made that rule. But it looks some people weren't paying attention

@Algy

I see I'm not the only one that goes to the SuicideSheep channel. Fantastic source for liquid.

Also both those video's are fantastic but I'm especially curious about Neuropop now. Never heard of it until now.

I'm thinking that it is related to Neurofunk. Which as you knows is heavy DnB. It even has the extra emphasis on the the snare which I know Neurofunk for. But it sounds less industrial

Quick, post drum and bass before OP changes his mind!

Ha! Ha! Time for DnB!

You know I've found a new favorite song when it goes up in my profile. I wanna say this is Bulletproof because he's a talented artists but I cant find this track anywhere in his discography

I'd guess that 'neuropop' is just supposed to be toned-down neurofunk. That song is a lot heavier than what you'd expect to hear in the charts, but you could also play it in a club without risking half of the crowd walking out (instead, maybe just a third would walk out). I suppose it's a sorta-decent way to describe the grey-area between normal dnb and acts like Misanthrop and Phace. Perhaps State of Mind could be categorised as such?

When I'm screwing around with my DJ stuff, I use folders labelled 'liquid', 'drumstep', 'dirty', and 'neuro', with 'dirty' being anything in the range of this to this. I suppose I'd stick anything 'neuropop' in there. (Really should get around to making an 'electro' folder for the likes of Camo & Krooked)

For the record, I really hate the word 'neurofunk'. My policy is to just call it 'neuro'. Same goes for 'liquid funk'. The acceptable names are 'liquid', or 'liquid dnb'. 'Best dnb' would also be acceptable.

Anyone else here into electroswing?

@Cale

Why not tell a bit about what you tastes are, or give some examples? There's a chance other people might know more along that lines and can provide you with that

Complaining about the tastes that have already been posted isn't going to help (also fuck you)

Cale wrote:

Oh look, an EDM thread. Maybe I'll find a new artist or genre, as long as no one posts some of that DnB stuff.

Oh well then.

Just counting the embedded videos, there are only 2 dnb songs on this entire page. Meanwhile, we have a tonne of dubstep, some glitch hop, some electro-swing, electro-house and the regular kind of house, trance and… also that song from Blade (honestly don't know how to categorise that one).

So rather than complaining about a complete non-issue, you could like, I don't know… contribute to the thread a little?

I don't usually listen to trance, but when I do:

@Algy

that song from Blade (honestly don’t know how to categorise that one).

Acid techno.

Speaking of Trance, my favorite artist is Dave 202. Definitely check him out. He does a large variety of different trance styles. All of them inspired
