I think there's a downvote spammer about.

I'm seeing some posts, both in the new and trending image section and random comments (Mine included) that seem to be arbitrarily downvoted. I don't want to name names or point fingers, but I thought I'd bring it to light and bring it to everyone's attention. What do you make of it?

oh no… someone disagrees with my view. call the fbi.

It's probably nothing to worry about.

That's what I thought too, and I didn't want to make a fuss, but to see it spill out to images that definitely don't deserve to be downvoted, I think it's less of someone disagreeing with what I comment and more someone actively downvoting everything in sight. The latter I have a bigger problem with. But if you don't care, that's cool, the whole point of this is to make you aware should the same happen to you.

This thread is only the latest of many.

There's been a serial downvoter causing trouble for almost a year now. From my observations, they tend to target anything RWBY related and certain users (myself included).

Judging by the inconsistency of time between posting and reception of downvote, it is most likely a tenacious user, probably one who was previously banned from the site. Said user might also be using alternate accounts to further cause trouble.

If it really bothers you that much, try contacting one of the mods about the problem. If all else fails, just sit back and ignore them.

You’ve awaken him, megasean3000.

I mean, everyone expected me to show up. Why Nima is still here is anyone's guess. Especially after all those super mean, unchristian things she said about KYM and its userbase but hey that's none of my business shiggy diggy my dude.

At this point it's obligatory. I'll spare you the long rant about how and why this is happening; yes, the answer is exactly as simple as "a guy went around and downvoted all my posts :((". Even without the hella old wall of information about everything to do with KYM's voting sytem, most of the answers you seek are in the thread right now. And also readily available via KYM's search function. Your valiant efforts to "let everyone know" are appreciated as much as the last 11 guys. Lets sort through them, so as to avoid any karmic fake news:

It’s probably nothing to worry about.

This one is true!. I understand that it's more difficult to overlook the issue when it affects your own content, but worrying over something that is neither consequential nor in your control seems like wasted energy. While we technically advise against witch hunts and other forms of public shaming on users, especially for matters involving karma, PMing the mods about it (or the user directly, if you have a name) usually makes you feel better. The KYM moderation team will offer its full emotional support in your time of karmic need. Historically speaking, the less a user cares about his/her karma score, they better they fare. With a few exceptions.

I think it’s less of someone disagreeing with what I comment and more someone actively downvoting everything in sight.

This one is true! You're on a roll here. As it turns out, there is no scientifically-proven time for the average human to stop caring about the content of a KYM comment and then click the reddest button they can find. Because it happens instantly. You shouldn't worry about the content of your comments or uploads; in all likelihood they would be downvoted no matter what. Not posting entirely, however, leaves one very well-protected against votes.

I don’t care if I get a few downvotes for stating my opinion. As long as we don’t have a bot spamming twenty of them at once like in the past, there’s nothing to worry about.

This one is false!. If you count it as a claim, anyways. As it happens, the super-strict 8-second timer on voting, coupled with KYM's javascript nightmare and terrible page response time makes bots kinda shitty. LIke, really shitty. Its true purpose is to catch every possible instance of advertising. It will also IP-ban any suspiciously repetitive connections, which includes spammers, media mods, and roommates.

There’s been a serial downvoter causing trouble for almost a year now. From my observations, they tend to target anything RWBY related and certain users (myself included).

This one is false! Well, sorta. First, KYM users have been burying opinions they disagree with for far more than a year. While super trendy galleries like RWBY and Stephen Universe tend to see more activity than others, downvotes will appear anywhere there are users, with heavy emphasis on politics and fandoms (whether you consider these different things is up to you). You'll also find that there are a large number of users doing this in small quantities, rather than a few select individuals. Any time a single user leaves enough votes to singularly affect a large portion of a gallery, they get Da boot.

There are certain, very specific special cases in which the votes are caused by a previously disgraced KYM user. Or Arcanine. Should this be the case, it will be apparent by the proceeding witchhunt, which is meant to foster community participation and build bonds between users. You'll know it when you see it.

If you refuse to accept such simple answers for what is obviously a multifarious and incredibly complex issue, click the image I've generously provided. And then keep clicking. Forever. I promise it will answer questions you didn't even know you had, and then some.
