Sequels/revivals you wanted years ago but now you're not so sure if you even want them anymore

Putting this in "general" since this isn't limited to just video games, movies, TV shows, etc.

With the recent announcement that Valve is at long last making a new Half-Life game, but with mixed opinions about it being a virtual reality game, I figured this would be a good time to make this sort of thread.

Anyway one for me is Austin Powers 4. I still enjoy the original trilogy of Austin Powers films that came out in the late 90s and early 00s, especially since this was arguably when Mike Myers was at a real comedic peak. I recall Myers stating as early as the mid 00s he wanted to eventually do a fourth movie and I think other cast members like Seth Green were on board, but I'm kinda wondering if at this point if a new Austin Powers movie might feel like a case of "too little, too late." For one, one of the most famous cast members who's not Mike Myers has since passed away (Verne Troyer, best known for playing Mini Me), Myers hasn't been doing so hot ever since the original trilogy ended (one could say it started with the infamous Cat in the Hat movie and reached a real low point around the time of Love Guru), and I dunno I guess just worry the humor won't be up to par with the originals.

Honestly, Splinter Cell for me.
I've always been a big fan of the stealth game for a long long time, but if it was announced now, I wouldn't have much hopes for it. Chiefly because I'm certain Ubisoft would try and convert it into yet another open-world, collectible hunting, box-ticking, microtransaction fest like Ghost Recon, Far Cry and Assassins Creed.

Part of me also feels like they ultimately need to bite the bullet and replace Sam. Yeah, he's probably one of the best characters Ubisoft ever had, but both his character and Micheal Ironside are getting old. I think its time for them to pass the torch to someone else, let someone else become the new face of Splinter Cell.

I don't know, but one thing for certain is that Ubisoft needs to get its head out of the usual open-world shtick and back into its roots again.

I remember they originally wanted to make Conviction sort of open world but ended up going back on the idea when it just didn't work out so well during development. Yeah I'm not sure if Splinter Cell would work that well as an open world title, I'd rather that be one franchise Ubisoft stick to being a linear level-by-level game (while still keeping your options on how to complete objectives open of course). The president of the company admitted they fucked up with the recent Ghost Recon game so they might be seriously rethinking certain plans going forward (I can say that unlike a company such as EA, at least when Ubisoft admits they fucked up they do try and make up for it, and honestly they do tend to succeed as noted with things like Assassin's Creed after the botched Unity launch, their continued support for For Honor, and Watch_Dogs 2 being an improvement over the original in terms of your hacking options and more memorable characters). As of 2019 the only nods to SC we've gotten in recent years was Sam appearing in a piece of crossover DLC in the previous Ghost Recon game, Wildlands, and one of the expedition levels in Far Cry: New Dawn is a swamp where Sam's mobile operations base from Blacklist crash landed (as that game is post-apocalyptic) and you can find his stealth suit and a letter written by Sam saying he's going to try and make it back to his daughter Sarah.

Jurassic world was this for me, hadn’t thought about it in years, then when they announced a new one I was exited untill I saw the trailors

Spore, just because it’s still owned by ea

Supreme Commander, becuase they dumbded it down to unimaginable levels to try to make a starcraft competitor, when I was younger I really wanted a new one
and I, naively, they’d bring back the tech levels and whatnot, but now I’ve realized series never add fetures back, theh just take them away

I also really enjoyed Austin Powers trilogy, but its been almost 2 decades since the last film's release. Taking the phrase too little, too late to an extreme here. I believe Hollywood would be too afraid to make a 4th film as the series has mostly faded from public conscious. There's an entire generation of young adults now who likely have no idea what Austin Powers is. Compromising with a remake or reboot of the series would probably alienate long time fans. Not to mention that the sort of genre Austin Powers derives from, parody films, peaked during the early to mid 2000's. A 4th sequel would feel like a dinosaur at this point, it would most certainly bomb at the box office. I'd rather it be left in the grave with the dignity the franchise still has, I'd hate to see it suffer the same fate as recent examples, Terminator and Charlies Angels.

And speaking of Half Life, I long ago came to terms that it was dead and moved on. It's nice to see it pop up from the grave, but I don't expect more than a sweet, but curt hello from HL:Alyx. We'll see on Thursday, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Pokemon Diamond/Pearl remake

While I did watch a lot of the Pokemon anime as a kid, I wasn't aware there were games until Emerald. However, my first Pokemon game was Pearl, and I loved it, despite the many glaring problems with it looking back. After Gen 3 got its remake with ORAS, I was excited to see what Game Freak could do with a remake of Diamond/Pearl, and implement the fixes from Platinum and later Pokemon entries. But with how much of a hot mess Sword/Shield has been, I'm very hesitant as to whether or not a Diamond/Pearl remake would be a good idea given Game Freak's current business model.

Any new Godzilla movie after Godzilla vs Kong.

Joined the fandom after the first Legendary Godzilla in 2014. After learning more about the series, I thought that the Big G was back and KOTM in 2019 would turn him into an icon like the MCU did to Marvel. But after KOTM's poor performance in the box office, I'm still trying to figure out why it failed. In the end, I felt as if Godzilla is a niche franchise and KOTM was a film made by Godzilla fans for Godzilla fans and not the casual move-goer. I hope that's not true and there's a better reason for KOTM's poor performance, but if Godzilla vs. Kong doesn't save the Legendary Monsterverse, then I think it's best to leave the Godzilla series to rest.

Been kinda hoping for Happy Tree Friends to make a comeback (and tbf, it did have one a couple of years back), but ultimately, the niche it once had back then of "looks cute but it's actually very violent" has been less and less special over the years, it's much more common and less of a novelty for animation to be targeted towards adults as time has gone on, so I think it'd better to let it rest as a relic of the past.

It’s becuase for some reason (I blame transformers) people seem to think movies about aliens, robots, or giant monsters, should focus on the humans instead
Hell, I’m no Godzilla fan (the only one I enjoyed was 98) and I love KOTM

Elder Scrolls 6

One of my favorite game series, since I love sandbox rpgs.

But looking at how TES and the Fallout series have been dumbed down game by game + the fiasco that Fallout 76 was I have some serious doubts if TES6 is a title worth to look forward to.

Quake.
People are begging for a sequel to the original for years.
But considering what happened with Quake Champions,a game where the devs didn't even know what to do with it and the fact they don't seem to bring the franchise to single player anymore,so yeah I'm not too sure.

Better yet,MachineGames said they would like to make a new Quake game based on the first one. And given their track record with Wolfenstein from New Order to Youngblood,no thanks,I want it to stay dead.

Any future Star Wars movies.

Considering the current canon and how it will paint the future of all Star Wars content I've never wanted a film series to end permanently this much.

Mass Effect Spinoff.

After Andromeda I know that the series isn't in the hands of competent creators so I would rather a more experienced and talented team take it over until I get my hopes up.

As was mentioned, a Diamond/Pearl remake, after the Sword and Shield mess.

And to a lesser extent a Spore remake/upheaval; it's EA, but it's a game that doesn't lend itself particularly well to microtransactions (DLCs would definitely work very well, though), and even with some of those that do, they've gotten slightly less awful about it over time.

What makes it even more asinine with Star Wars movies is how restricted they are.
They don't expand to new horizons, they always focus on the same stuff.

Again, the prequels had tons of problems but managed to create new worlds and concepts that enriched the lore.
A lot of the expanded universe content is dumb as well but surely didn't make Star Wars boring, which is the worst that can happen to a franchise,

Oh I got a new one.

A new Silent Hill

Unless Konami brings back the majority of people who used to be on Team Silent, I don't think I want Konami to announce any new SH games, especially after what happened with Contra: Rogue Corps.

A proper new C&C installement AKA Generals 2.

The Generals universe is the only setting of the whole franchise that can plausibily have a sequel. Both Tiberian and Red Alert storylines are concluded story-wise (unless they retcon the trainwreck that was Tiberian Twilight and pretend it was just a bad dream Kane had) and the Generals universe still has room for new stories. THAT SAID it's EA that we're talking about and obiously they will attempt to make serious efforts to monetize the product post-purchase with all this 'games as a service' BS that every major publisher is taking into pratice.

The other problem arises with the question: Who is going to develop it? As far as I know EA Los Angeles is no more and it's employees scattered to diverse companies one of which is Petroglyph. Petroglyph is currently developing the Tiberain Dawn and Red Alert 1 remasters at a snail pace. Petroglyph games are well… not that good, the sole exception was Empire at War which is pretty great despite some of the unit designs are weird and make no sense in-universe (like the TIE Mauler; which takes a cheap, mass-produced, replaceable and very fragile starfighter design and repourpuses it as an armored ground vehicle)

All that said. The biggest issue about making a Generals sequel is that the RTS genre is pretty much dead. Only Microsoft is currently wagering on the genre with AoE 4 and even if it gets good reviews and high sales at launch it might not revive these kind of games.

The Suikoden series. They were among my favorite games growing up, but Konami suddenly stopped making actual games involving it with the last title being a DS title that's only resemblance to the rest of the series is that it shares a name, and you collect 108 different individuals. With how they are now, I'm scared to see what they'd make if they ever bring the series back.

Any old bioware game. I'm still sad that Jade Empire never got a sequel. It was a great game. Perhaps not the best of the Bioware games, but it was certainly not bad or mediocre. I actually beat it relatively recently (like a year or two ago) and found myself wishing for a sequel.

Of course, you could argue that this wish of mine has already been monkey's paw'ed with SWTOR and ME:A and DA.

Gotta second TerribleTrike's Star Wars sentiment.

Oh, here's another one I forgot: Older Star Wars games. Why? EA and the general trends of the gaming industry compared to the days of Battlefront, Empire at War and Republic Commando.

You kinda indirectly said it, but general any potential spinoff or sequel material relating to Kotor or the old republic era in general is now painful to think about, a large amount of people who played those games wanted Darth Revan to be made canon some way but as it stands now I wouldn't trust Disney to do it without botching his character more than TOR already did.

Paper Mario

While the first game is one of my all time favorite games, and TYD is at least top 10 of any Gamecube game list I'm not quite sure I want that nostalgia to have a chance of being ruined. They already had a chance to redeem themselves after Sticker Star and flubbed it. Since Intelligent Systems seems to be focusing more on Fire Emblem (with positive results from what I've seen) I'd rather they just focus on that instead of trying to go back.

I already had to deal with Majora's Mask 3D, I'd rather not have the same with Paper Mario as well.

Dissidia 012 is probably my favorite game in the world and when NT was announced i couldn't be any more exited, then the game happened, it was such a letdown that it was surprising for me how much they ruined, how everything was so oversimplified, no moves customization, no item customization, no EX mode, no FFXII's Gabranth, 3v3 only, none of the original maps, every map being so simple, an incredibly disjointed story from the game play, it was just to much for me.

I know that many westerns players share my view of NT, but apparently the game is successful on Japan (where Square cares), where was originally released as an arcade game, with the PS4 and PC versions being the ports, that explain with the game had so much less content than the PSP game. But this success makes more probable than the fact that the fanqie is going to be expanded even further.

The version that I loved was niche and only a mild success. The version that I hate was the successful one, so I don't think that any new Dissidia game would be of my liking
