Was there a method of making memes before meme generators besides photoshop? I'm doing a research project on memes, but documented history is kinda foggy. I'm specifically looking for info on image macro memes.

Definition from this site of what an image macro is, implies that all you need is an image and something to write a text on it. Anything that can write with impact font over an image can be used to make internet memes.
