Locked Locked
[Report Problems] Locking the Tumblr gallery - Please don't

This is a serious continuation of this thread here
I wasn't sure whether to put this in here or "Report Problems", but I decided on here, feel free to move it if needed.
I also wasn't really sure if the linked topic was serious or just a joke, from what was said after I asked I can only seem it's really going to happen and is meant sincerely. So this topic is made with that assumption.

This is a very bad idea. It's mostly based on what seems to be a very small issue at most, if not a complete non-issue. If something is relevant to 2 or more galleries then it's pretty obvious that it's a fit for all of them. Even if one of those is a better fit than the other(s), it's still ridiculous to get so angry about them doing something that's such a minor mistake and not necessarily even really wrong to begin with!
As I said there I have a specific example not related to Tumblr, which I will give now to demonstrate.
I recently uploaded this picture:

This picture is relevant to My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and Warhammer 40000, both basically equally so it could go into either gallery and be just as valid in either. I picked MLP just because I figured there'd be less backlash to Warhammer stuff in the MLP gallery than MLP stuff in the Warhammer gallery. Later it was moved and I wasn't bothered, it fit just as well in that gallery but if I had been punished for putting it in the MLP gallery or they started threatening to close the MLP gallery because of posts like this then I WOULD be rather miffed to say the least because I put it there for perfectly valid reasons.
Now let's say the same thing happened to the next MLP/40k crossover I uploaded:

Again, relevant to both but I decided it was better in the MLP gallery and more relevant to MLP since it's all MLP stuff with just a 40k reference. This one wasn't moved but if it had been I would've been a bit puzzled for that reason, I might have even asked why. If the MLP gallery was threatened with closure because of pictures like THIS then I would've been seriously pissed off because that's where it belongs and getting mad at people for not shoehorning it into something else just to avoid being in a popular gallery would be complete and utter madness.
So why do I bring this up? Because the same thing could be happening in the Tumblr gallery (and indeed most of the stuff they take issue with seems to be like this): either it's equally relevant to both Tumblr and X so they decided to put it in the Tumblr gallery (which would be no more or less valid than putting it in the X gallery) or it's more relevant to Tumblr than X so they put it in the Tumblr gallery (which would be the right choice). So neither of those are good reasons to threaten to shut down a gallery that still has 100% valid uses.

What's more, this wouldn't solve anything. Because the core "issue" is that you've got something that could fit into multiple places so they put it in the more popular one because it fits just as well as anything else. Guess what? That "problem" will be there for as long as there are galleries more popular than each other and pictures relevant to more than one of them. And I 'm sure I don't have to tell you that there's no way to actually stop that from happening. So by all means shuffle things around if needed but there will never, ever be a one-size-fits-all, one-time-only solution and by sacrificing so much in the pointless pursuit of one you will only cut off valid contributions and sow resentment among the very community responsible for actually giving content and making sure clicks roll in for your ad revenue. Surely I don't need to point out why that's bad either.

Lastly, the behavior of some of the moderation staff is rather appalling, seeming to belie a straight-up hatred of their own userbase and near god complex giving them the idea that nobody can ever have a point if they disagree with them and that they're always right. This is really not an attitude that moderators should have, and thinking this way simply makes them a ticking time bomb.

I hope that mostly covers it, but I can explain more if needed.

EDIT

Apparently this thread was moved. Still, please no shitposting in threads meant to be serious.

I think the problem is that it states "If an image can be placed in a more relevant gallery, please upload it to that gallery and not the Tumblr gallery." But was this ever serious? I've only seen people joke about this

I literally could not be more serious.

Rude.

Who's moderating the moderators?

They're getting powercrazy and out of control, as our dear OP rightly points out.
We need a points system, like the DMV, so many infractions and your mod status is removed.

What merciful, caring soul would be willing to dedicate their time and energy to monitoring mod behavior in the interest of preserving the basic rights and dignity the common KYM user against such rampant, tyrannical forces?

I propose myself~

Lisa, you clearly haven't learned how things work around here.

Allow me to clue you in. I am the designated moderator of moderators.

@Lurk: Yeah, this really needs to stay serious even though this is in a different forum now.

@Particle Mare: This is part of what I was talking about, just laughing at something rather than actually seriously giving level-headed reasoning and counter-arguments.

@Ryuman: Which is why it's worrying that they're now getting pissed about images that are just as relevant or more to the Tumblr gallery.
As for being serious, apparently so, though I suppose I could be wrong. Again, as I said this is all based on that assumption and if it's not true then none of this is an issue.

Admins Admins Admins

If you have a problem with the moderation team, bring it up with them. They're the ones who moderate the moderators, Lisa.

Secondly:

It's in riff-raff. It's a joke. No one is actually serious. This is why everyone is laughing about you actually making a counter-argument thread. The tumblr gallery is approaching the severity of cringeworthy, but it's nowhere near there. Those of us watching it are simply noticing the trends that got cringeworthy eventually locked and joking that we might as well lock it now. If we have to lock it, it'll have to be significantly worse than it is now, but I won't be surprised, based on prior experience, if it does get to that point.

We are aware that some images have relevancy in multiple galleries. That's exactly why there is a notification at the top of the tumblr gallery submission page to submit it to any other relevant gallery. If it fits better with another meme, we would rather see it there, and dupes are discouraged in any situation. I trust Jacob's judgement, as he's been one of our better image mods for awhile – anything he's moved more than likely deserved to be there.

If we seem more severe, it's likely because as the site is becoming more academic in nature, we need to keep it more focused and academically sound – which is counter to what many users believe the site to be. It's a direction that the moderation and admin team have taken and that we intend to continue to take. This is why we have had to repeatedly regulate the Gamergate entry to keep it objective, even though that comment section has become a gamergater hub, and locked galleries that continued to be abused after being warned and reprimanded repeatedly. Riff-raff suspensions are only allowed because we set that warning from day one, and we've consciously cut down on the number of suspensions we've given there. I was one of the heavier riff-raff suspenders and haven't done one in weeks.

I fondly remember when gallery locking was considered like the death penalty-- reserved for heinous and severe offenses. Now it seems like the mods whip it out every other week for a "misbehaving" gallery. When Cringeworthy got locked, it was a pretty big thing with threads of discussion. Now it gets shitposting "games."

If that is a "serious" thread and not just useless mod shitposting, it's incredibly poorly done. One of the jobs of a moderator is to moderate. When an image is in the wrong gallery, move it to the correct one, or grant Scrapbookers the ability to move images to a different gallery if the "problem" is so overwhelming. Nuking a gallery because you're lazy and don't feel like sorting the images is bad and making a game out of it is even worse.

Just throwing in my two cents, giving Scrapbookers the power to move images is a very, very bad idea. There would be edit wars, and many, many who don't use this power correctly will basically mess up everything by moving images in the wrong places, etc.

Uploading 100, 200,etc. images doesn't mean you're worthy for said power

Okay. Here are my thoughts on this.

Your ideas are terrible and riddled with infantile sentiment.

Firstly, linking to a wikipedia page on the death penalty is unnecessary. I have no idea why you would do it. It just feels like you had to make sure you knew what the death penalty is. Your problem though, not ours.

The locking of galleries has always been done to entries that got out of hand. You may choose to call it "misbehaving" but that would be akin to giving your special brand of ineptitude the title of "user-friendly".

Allow me to explain, the MLP comments section was locked after a big shitstorm over users being told to move to the forums. The cringeworthy gallery was locked because users uploaded any subjective item they wanted to. Threads have been closed because of derailment.

Locking anything is done simply because rules are not followed. Don't act like you know more than someone who remembers even the pettiest of shit to win arguments, you'll always lose.

As for that thread and how you feel about it? It's a joke, not a dick. Stop taking it so hard. You're in here telling moderators that they can't have fun but must always work as slaves for the users who are too stupid to keep their wieners inside their pants when they zip.

Sounds like you need a reality check.

If you really want the gallery to remain open, organize. Start working with users, calling them out, directing them, etc. Don't assume that moderators must pick up the slack because you're too lazy to do it yourself. The galleries are a privilege that you're all quickly burning up. You all overestimate your importance to this site. We'd do just as well having the galleries and comments locked, remember that.

Also, giving scrapbookers image powers is the dumbest idea I've ever heard. You people can barely jerk yourselves off without swallowing each other's loads. How the hell are we supposed to trust you people to manage anything?

Giving Scrapbookers or higher the ability to move images will be a total disaster, believe it or not, the media mods are pretty damn quick solving problems, thing is, the Tumblr gallery is most likely doomed to become worse, if the warning won't work I think the countdown is a pretty good way to figure out if it should be locked or not even if it's just for sh*ts and giggles, it will give a general idea , I know mistakes can be made but I think it's been far too long, even with the obligatory tags some people just barely put 1-2 or even irrelevant ones

I said it before and I'll say it again: The locking of popular galleries just pissed off a very vocal minority, most people don't give a crap or forget with time, if it really was such an issue there would be more people complaining, or hell, even trying to lessen the problem

There is a place and a time for everything, this is a meme documenting site not a place to boost your ego with points, it has it's rules and if you can't respect them might as well leave to another place that suits your needs better

@Particle Mare: This is part of what I was talking about, just laughing at something rather than actually seriously giving level-headed reasoning and counter-arguments.

Sorry, the absurdity of the situation overtook me. Jacob creates an obvious bait thread in Riff Raff, a bunch of people take it seriously, said thread turns into a serious debate topic somehow, an actual serious debate thread gets created to continue an argument that began as Riff Raff shitposting, and now Bob has come back from the dead to lay down sick burns.

This is the Do Not Let KYM Become Like 4chan of 2015.

Jacob has tried attacking the gallery before, keep it from happening again by reminding them who uses the site (read as pays their bills).

By the following: Keep finding images that belong in other galleries and uploading it to tumblr as usual. And if they lock the page/gallery while we follow the rules.

1.Try to get the problem mods removed and replaced by better mods.

2.Inform your friends to turn add-blocking programs on on KYM.

3.Make as much noise about it as possible, inform advertisers of KYM’s abusive/crazed mods that do not follow their site’s own rules.

Remember SJWs and abusive/crazed mods start at the small things and grow overtime. Do not let Tumblr become like Cringeworthy.

TA and PM:

Stay on topic.

Edit: Particle Mare brought up a good point. The thread was made through mistaken intent, so it's really not necessary to keep it open. Locking and moving, because this thread was great.
