He's just isn't likeable as a character, even more if he's the main character. He gets shadowed by every single leader of the kids in all the other seasons (and yes, all the other seasons).

Most of the male leads in harem anime. I guess they are intentionally designed to be bland and bereft of any kind of personality, so that pretty much anyone will be able to identify with them.

Aiden Pearce from Watch Dogs

Did they even try to make this guy interesting? There's Booker DeWitt, there's Joel from the Last of Us, then there's Aiden Pearce. He's the epitome of the cliche badass white guy. He's even got the gruff voice and the dark past. At least Joel and Booker, albeit cut from the same cloth as Aiden, are interesting and distinct. You'd think since Aiden's game focuses on tech there'd be more to hacking and computer jargon when it comes to him, but there's not a whole lot. His dark past doesn't even connect with the stuff he's doing. It's like he just had his niece died, and his brain snapped and he just went all "welp, time to be (poor) batman"

New Sonic the Hedgehog. I liked him more when he knew to keep his fucking mouth shut.

mostly becuase he suck in personality and gameplay his stats are shit along you need make some things wich annoying as fuck to make him decent plus his late promotion in the game.

Honestly, playing as the male version of Commander Shepard is way dissapointing compared to playing as the female version.

I would put Lester from Lester the Unlikely, but I'll give poor Les a break. Instead I'll say Drake from Drake of the 99 Dragons is the worst protagonist. He's a horrendous assassin that goes in guns blazing and also dies about five times in the story only to be brought back to life each time by some spirit gods.

I don't really get the leader vibe I get from the comics and even the various television series the character appears in. Mix in the sex jokes and his tendency to betray lie to everyone and you get this jerk.

You forgot to mentioned that he dives out the window by himself at one point for no reason or purpose whatsoever. He would have stayed dead if he wasn't the protagonist of the game.

Also, every time his gun ran out of ammo, he thew the gun away.

Another thing, I started playing Kid Icarus recently and I can't stand Pit in the slightest. It's like the writers and the voice actor tried to get every annoying trait a person could possibly have and condense it into one character. I think that's what they were going for but it's pretty sickening.

@Sam: Kid Icarus is one of those very VERY awkward-ass situations where you start the game hating literally everything besides maybe the music and visuals, but by chapter 8 you wouldn't have it any other way.

If there is any one standout protagonist that I don't like, it might have to be… Emil from Tales of Symphonia 2. He is like Shinji, yet worse than Shinji. He spends most of the game getting buried in unconditional love, special abilities, etc yet can never comprehend nor properly handle any of it. Commonly fucking up as a result of it inspite of any amount of time that passes.

Luke from Tales of the Abyss was in a similar situation, but he had an excuse to be a socially awkward retard with no sense of right or wrong, and his special treatment ended as soon as he left his mansion. Emil on the other hand just bumbled his way to the end of the game.

This version of Link kinda bothers me. Like the cartoon version, he's pretty annoying and keeps pestering on Zelda to get a kiss from her. Only good thing about him is that he says some memetic lines.

If there was ever a character worthy of being literally named Mary Sue it would be Alice from the Resident Evil films. And it's really terrible when a movie series based off a series of games has to have the actual protagonists do jack shit when this Mary Sue comes in to save the day with her psychic abilities and insane martial arts bullshit. She also gets bonus points for actually being played by the director of the film series Paul W.S. Anderson 's wife, Milla Jovovich.

Akemi Nakajima creates a program that would summon demons, which would create a series of disasters killing MANY innocent lives, JUST so he can kill some school bullies.

If people who assist protagonists count: Lester. Fucking. Crest, atleast in GTA:O. He makes a bunch of stupid jokes, acts like a idiot, chooses a armored car for a simple bank job and 4 shitty bikes for a gigantic job. I honestly stand Simeon in online better than him. (he's also probably a kym moderator because he drives a car based on the chevy sonic).

Also the kid from that shitty disney show where he draws things and they come to life or something. He's a fucking idiot and is just a dick. Also everyone in that shitty disney show where rich people live in a apartment and make humor out of stereotypes or something. All jerks.

This is mainly due to the new writer can't remember his name. But ever since Hillenberg left the show has widely known to be in the pits and I think that was since 2005 or something. So for most of the show's existence it's been pretty bad by the opinion of most including myself. It's one of those show's I wish would just be killed to save it pain since it's so sick and old just like an animal but by now it's probably too late. There are good episodes here and there but most will just leave you sour.

And pretty much the reason not many people above the target audience like it anymore is because of the character butchering done by the new writer. He made basically everyone unlikable and the only likable characters in the show he designated as outlets for the rest of the cast to unload hell upon like plankton and squidward as you accurately described to the point where you just feel sorry for them and want to wring the necks of the characters who consistently do them wrong since the writers can't think of anything unique to do other than make them suffer. Even the random fish citizens who eat at the Krusty Krab and walk around town became worthless dimwits most of the time. The writing degraded all the characters to being one characteristic, and probably their worst one. For example Spongebob is only annoying, Patrick is just stupid to where it's not even funny, Mr Krabs jacks off to money and nothing else, Sandy's a scientist, Mrs Puff is driven insane, etc. It's very saddening. Even just seeing the movie that came out recently which the old writer came back to do and was actually pretty decent but still below the first in terms of comedy it really reminds you of how the new writer basically made all the characters 1-dimensional and largely unlikable.

For a deeper reason that "I don't like him" or "He's Whiney", rather what he came to represent.

And this is coming from someone who considered himself an "Evangelion apologist" for years. Evangelion was a series that started out with a LOT of potential, but then devolved into a never ending pseudo-psycological circle jerk about being depressed. That culminated itself in Shinji. Who embodies the phrase "I am depressed, therefore I cannot".

As someone who has grown up his entire life around depressed people, I can confirm that this is a very common line of thinking among people who suffer from it. Which in all honesty is a rather linear shallow thought process.

What anno does is create a perfect scenario in which Shinji cannot progress any further, denied at all attempts by the story; because he himself is depressed. And with that Shinji becomes Anno's personal soapbox; endlessly spinning his wheels and going nowhere. A character arc more akin to a flatline.

The fact that a more interesting, progressive, and dynamic character was sacrificed for this is the reason why I despise Shinji; or rather the puppet master that pulled the strings.

(The same puppet master that brought us 3.0 and dragged us back down to square one after the Rebuild series had done an astounding job of avoiding all the problems of the original series)

I know I'm going to get flak for this, but I'm gonna be honest, I think Jonathan is the second worst JoJo. The reason being is that he's not very interesting at all, and keeps this white knight personality about him at all times, being pure and just and all that shit. While that's not bad, there's nothing to give it flavor at all besides 'look at this cool mofo'.

Let's look at the other JoJos as examples. Jotaro is a dick because his father went overseas and never returned, leaving him with a mother who was a stark contrast to his personality. Joseph is here to break things and have fun, which is a great character trait. Josuke just wants his town to be safe, and goes after the killers that lurk Duwang Morioh.

Jolyne is a dick like her dad because his dad pissed off overseas (get it sea ha ha) and she had to fend for herself most of the time. Johnny is mufucking Johnny. The problem with Jonathan is that he simply does not compare to the other JoJos character wise.

Hell, I'd even go further than you. For me he's my LEAST favorite Jojo protagonist. Giorno comes in second (as he's just a fusion of Johanathan and Phantom Blood Dio)

But even HE got more depth and awesome moments than Johanathan.

Ex: Avenging the old man, his own "MUDAMUDAMUDAMUDAMUDA!" against cioccolata, his goodbye to Bruno, and stabbing himself with the arrow.

It really depends on the episode, especially in the newer season. In one episode, Spongebob is an unlikable ungrateful jerk. In another episode, Spongebob is an annoying stalker. Most episodes either portrays him as annoying manchild or just loves to work at Krusty Krab. Same goes to any other character.

Though there's no episode where Mr. Krabs isn't greedy.

The thing that makes Gio worse than Jonathan is that Gio is just so goddamn dry. There is absolutely no humor or likeability to his character, whilst Jonathan actually did have some likeability to him. While your points are true, I think that Gio is so bland as to make him boring in comparison to SUNLIGHT YELLOW OVERDRIIIIIVE.

Agreed, Jonathan might be a nice guy and all. But, Jonathan isn't really interesting. It feels that he was made to have only one objective, which is: "Defeating Dio". So when I first saw Joseph, I was really surprised to see a Jojo that's here to "break things and have fun" instead of someone like Jonathan. But maybe it was intentional, so you can tell the diffrence between Jonathan and Joseph.

characters who are essentially mass murderers, but only kill criminals are really hit and miss, because some times you can have sympathetic characters with interesting development (travis bickle or rorschach for example), or you could have an edgy cardboard cutout who only speaks in threats and "muh dead family!!!!"

Despite his "superior" level of intelligence, Jimmy Neutron in nothing more than a fucking douchebag, that boasts every single time like a fucking idiot, makes inventions doomed to fail, and treads his best friends like fucking guinea pigs. I can't feel sympathy for a little kid that make scientists look like horrible fucking idiots!

Murder innocent truckers who were just minding their own business, stealing their tanker, drives to the power planet while murdering every police officer that tries to stop him, murders all of the plant's workers, and then blows up the plant, which would probably deny power to several cities, or even the whole state, and then proceeds to go through the main gate that WASN'T ELECTIFIED and ALREADY OPEN.

And the worst part about this is that i'm only just scratching the surface of how heinous this character is.
