There are references all over the place on this site about it yet no one I know watches it and no one ever tells me what its about. Is it trying to be goofy and wacky like tongue and cheek or is it serious?

I like wacky shit like kill la kill and gurren lagann more then serious anime so idk if I should check it out.

First of all, somebody move that thread to moving images.

Now on topic.

JoJo has it's serious and goofy moments. Probably the main reason why people watch JoJo is because how over the top it is and how, true to it's name, bizarre is.

It doesn't take itself too seriously tho.

It's up to you whenever you'll either like it or not. I can't force you to like it.

Now, here's for when Joseph Joestar fights a serious opponent:

Point of clarification: Before Stands, the Jojos fought vampires with Hamon, which is the power of the Sun channeled through martial arts. Whammu here is a Pillar Man, a primordial supervampire with complete control over his flesh.

From Part 2 onwards, virtually every fight is a puzzle and a game of wits. Strength won't win fights here, only cleverness. This is the other reason to watch this show/read the manga. It's as different from Bleach and Dragonball Z as can be, while still being Shonen.

Oooooooooooh wait so THIS is that anime with the stands. So they don't even use those until half way into the series?

Lets ask some theoretical questions to see if your familiar with Jojo's cultural impact.

Do you like the Persona video game series? Personas have drawn inspiration from Stands which are an in-universe aspect of JJBA.
Do you like the Street Fighter video game series? Several character designs including Guile, and Rose are base visually on certain characters from JJBA.
Do you like/have heard of Fist of the North Star? JJBA creator, Hirohiko Araki, originally based his designs, and inspirations for Jojo off of Fist of the North Star.

Now for some less serious questions

Do you like very creative, and generally nice fan-bases with incredibly funny in-jokes?
Do you like references to Western Rock&Roll bands, and other such musicians of the 60's-00's?
Do you like manly men making incredibly impossible poses?
Do you like serious action scenes followed by incredibly goofy, and, dare i say, bizarre scenes?
Do you like vampires, sociopaths, and other such deranged enemies?
Do you like villains who are some impossibly evil you can't help, but like every bit of their personality?
Do you enjoy learning actually interesting, and relative historical/cultural trivia?

TL;DR There is too much to Jojo to describe every aspect of it as it is an on-going, and continually changing series of more than 30 year. However even if you were to go into JJBA knowing absolutely nothing about it other than the praise and acclaim of what others have to say it is still a very entertaining, and well done anime that's at least worthy of checking out a few episodes of. If you aren't immediately hook, i'd recommend watching to at least episode three as the first story arc really picks up from there.

Ever wanted to see gentleman Kenshiro fight a vampire?
Ever wanted to see a fabulous Kenshiro fight glorious aztec gods thingy?
Ever wanted to see delinquent Kenshiro fight a orangatang?

Because this is what jojo bizarre adventures is about (more or less give it or take)
manly man
doing manly things
and boy this stuff is bizarre

So are stands like a huge thing? Cuz every time I see this show it has to do with stands posing or punching really really fast some times all 3.

So its just a 24 episode thing or are there going to be more? From what I see on watch cartoons online there are only 2 24 episode seasons

So pretty much JJBA is written in Parts covering full story arcs. parts 1+2 are before stands are introduced and focus on a concept called Hamon/ripple which is strong in it's own respect. Part 3-8(the most recent part) involve stands. Stands are superior in every way to hamon and it sadly doesnt get any use out of it after part 3.

As for the anime it's 74 episode in total as of now. The 2012 series a.k.a season one is simply called Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, it covers the first two parts of the series.
Part 1 is 9 episode long, and Part 2 is 17 episodes long. So the whole season is your adverage 26 episodes.
The second season, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders, is a full 24 episodes covering the first half of Part 3. Part three is the first long Part, and is also the most popular Part of Jojo in Japan so its been given the red carpet treatment.
And finally, the third season is Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders; Battle for Egypt. It is also 24 episodes covering the second half of Part 3. That season just ended not too long ago, and is the most current one until Part 4 which has yet TBA.

Edit: Yeah what Space Cowboy said too.

Stands are very much a huge thing, starting from Part 3 and continuing on throughout the later parts.

And regarding the two 24 episode seasons, those are seasons 2 and 3 of a current 3 season anime. Keep in mind that the first season, which isn't Part 3, is 26 episodes long and deals with Parts 1 and 2. Now that the third season (and thus Part 3) has finished, most JoJo viewers are anticipating another season, which would now then follow with Part 4. So far, no word on a new season has come up yet. However, as shown with several clips already posted here, the first season of JoJo is getting an official English release.

EDIT: Okay, StoneColdKillerWhale already elaborated on your question a little before I did. But anyways, if you have more questions, feel free to ask.

More. First season (covering Parts 1 & 2) was 26 episodes, Stardust Crusaders came in a total of 48 episodes.

As for Stands, virtually every antagonist from Part 3 onwards has one, and all of the main cast from that point on are the same.

"Punch-ghosts," some call them. But Stands can do way more than just that. Every user has unique abilities, you see, and there are dozens of Stands.

Damn, I am late.

You want convincing? Lemme give you a little taste of Jojo, in moonspeak AND in English.

Drink Coca Cola.

10/10 would listen to awful fake accent and obnoxious stereotype again.

le me dio xDDDDDDDDDD

I've watched up to the halfway point of the second arc and I can't tell if I'm watching it wrong or something. I like it, but I can't take it seriously. At all. To me, it's one big comedy. When I watch, I'm constantly chuckling, even at the things I'm probably not supposed to find funny. "Haha! His friend died!"

I've always thought this show just wasn't my thing. And from seeing some clips here, yeah I think this really isn't my thing. Made me chuckle a bit, but generally I'm not a big fan of over-the-top, although stuff like Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance can make me laugh my shorts off for being so damn edgy. Maybe I'd watch some more JJBA for more funnies when I'm in the mood. I could take MLP and Fallout more seriously than this. Heck, I thought the crossover of both series Fallout Equestria was hard to swallow, but from what I've seen JJBA really takes the cake when it comes to being hard to take seriously.

That's how I treat kill la kill. Kill la kill feels serious but at the same time a a sudo parody of anime

It sounds like you're going about it the wrong way. Camp and cheese isn't supposed to be taken dead seriously. : P
