It is no secret that there has been a resurgence of "wave" music based on 80s post punk, coldwave, and new wave, and 90s and 2000s chill wave, and electronica in general. Today we are seeing an explosion in retrowave, vaporwave, and now simpsonswave music, which, in my opinion, is fantastic.

I am wondering what gave impetus for this kind of explosion. It seems to me to coincidentally rise from around the time when dubstep started emerging as the new popular electronic music.

The amazing thing is that a lot of this music is fueled by artists and individuals who may or may not be part of any major club scene, and are instead focusing on redistribution through digital media such and soundcloud, and youtube. I may be wrong, and I'd love to get more insight on this.

IMO, it seems to be a sort of nostalgia-centric movement. With the amount of information available, it seems that the inherent human fascination with what came before us seems to be in full swing. Think about how during the 90s there were so many revival genres, like punk, ska, swing, etc. It almost seems like a genre created today will be revived in 2036. As time goes on, things from the past become refreshing in a way.

I also would like to mention that this law isn't mutually exclusive to underground genres of electronic music, and that it's been happening to genres like glam metal, at least in the underground.

hell, when the 2020s roll around we might get a nu metal revival kek
