I've been a user on this site for a while now, and I wonder: why are thumbs up and thumbs down permanent? I don't really see a reason for it, and think that being able to take them back would be a much better solution. After all, you can unfavorite pictures and articles and such.

When originally implemented, a glitch was discovered in the voting system that allowed you to Upvote/Downvote twice. So the ability was removed in order to get the feature released on time.
Buuuuuuut the coder has been doing a bajillion other things after that, so that was never fixed. It was also deemed that being able to change your vote after an unprecedented amount of time was a tool that could potentially be used for Karma Trolling in the Forums, and would need extra code in order to put a time limit on the vote.
You can say it's sort of an anti trolling measurement, and, or not enough time to getting around to solving the problem due to bigger problems.
Well that's disappointing. Oh well, hopefully the feature will return in the future.
