1) I've heard that fungi have roughly 36,000 sexes. Is that true at all?
2) Quokka are a hoax, right?
Seriously, nothing this cute should even exist. If it does, then it must therefore be an unnatural abomination-- an incredibly cute one, but an abomination nonetheless.

Any biologists out there? I've got two questions.

Somehow, that doesn't surprise me, considering your choice of animal in your avatar.

Bio major here.
It's kinda true about fungi, but they aren't really "sexes" like male and female, but more like possible matches. This dude on Yahoo answers goes into more detail and explains it better.
Okay so Mycology isn't my specialization (neuro-endocrinology is my thing), but from what I've learned in my undergraduate work is that some members of fungi participate in Parasexual activities, which are outside Asexual and Sexual reproduction. They, uhhhhh….hook up? With spores of other fungi, I think. And they are the structures responsieble for hybridization of other species of fungi. But if the fungus wants to mate with the same species, they would have to initiate regular ol' sexual reproduction.
Quokka are fucking cute, to eloquently state. Totally real thingies, slightly threatened, population wise.

Okay, thanks for the answers. It's nice having a community that's large enough that pretty much guarantees a 99% chance that somesome will know something about a question one might have, yet small enough that you don't have to desl with things like never seeing the same people twice or being overwhelmed with the magnitude of the content created by the community, and the rate at which it's created.
