I'm not exactly sure, there have been a few bugs since the last major overhaul of the site. My guess would be that the total isn't factoring in memes entries that have either been deleted or changed from Active status back to Researching.

I'm not sure of the exact number of memes entries that have been rejected, but there have been some. There was one guy who kept trying to promote his Youtube/Microsoft Paint project and force a meme by trying to add it to the database. He did this a total of four or five times, and his video only had 50 views, and was not by any stretch of the imagination a meme. It's this kind of behavior that makes it neccessary for our site admins to approve meme entries before they go to Active status.

At first, admins were the only ones who could submit meme entries, then it changed to open meme entry submissions but Admins were the only ones who could view meme entries that with Active status or Unspecified. Then we ran into the case of multiple meme submissions from different users.

As long as most of the kinks have been worked out, everyone should now be able to submit new meme entries and view both Active and Researching meme entries. But meme entries still require Admin approval before going live. This ensures that the meme entry only contains the best factual information about the meme's back-story. If you spot an error, there is always the "Suggest Changes" link that allows you to email us with corrections.

The exact criteria for deciding on meme entries is still being developed, and as always, we rely on the opinions and views of the meme-loving community.
