Dear Pokémon Community, I owe you an apology.

The National Dex has returned in Home, and Gamefreak announced free updates and DLC for SwSh for future transfer. I think now’s about time that we Pokémon fans realize how much we tore our community apart in the months before that. We did eventually get what we wanted – a reason to “catch ‘em all” again – but at the cost of creating a toxic atmosphere for those against and in defense of the dex cut. I want us to mend ourselves together by apologizing. I’ll start.
In the months before and after SwSh’s release, I was obsessed with defending Gamefreak. Simply put, I did it in retaliation for how I was treated on this site for showing empathy towards a company. Pun called me “Kuntsuta” for understanding that putting in a National Dex in SwSh within months would lead to overworking. (They still called me that when I took a hiatus.) That was the first time I’ve ever had my internet name turned against me. And mind you, I’ve had it since 2013, so it hurt even more.
“If you punch someone, expect to be punched back.” That’s a lesson my father taught me. So I thought, “if I’m gonna be insulted for sharing my own opinion, I have every right to mock those guys back.” From then on, I went out of my way to tackle misinformation based on information gained from different Twitter users with experience in game design and translation. I knew I would get downvoted, but I at least wanted to make the effort since hardly anyone else on this site showed the same empathy.
The problem was that I and others were too mad to really understand each other’s perspectives. I was so caught up in my own anger that I forgot to stay respectful. So to the people I offended, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have left my own pride get the better of me over a name.
I know I don’t have the best portfolio here on KnowYourMeme, so you can downvote me if you really don’t feel like sharing. I understand it’s hard to admit you were wrong, so I don’t blame you for being adamant. But I just wanted to get this off my chest to truly move on.

Dude can you just drop this whole Pokémon sword and shield thing already?

Can you and others stop treating me as if I post nothing but Pokemon SwSh stuff? Because I have contributed other things to this site, you know. And it's not a crime for me to show empathy towards a game company for making a tough decision for their latest games. You don't get to judge me for my interests and concerns.

It's been months now, nobody is talking shit about it anymore other than cynics (who talk shit about everything).
Just chill, you're putting more stress about this than you should be and just…enjoy!

Look, im simply saying this as an observer to this ongoing shitshow with no personal stakes on the matter, and as someone who just wants to see some kind of civil end to this.

I haven't played a Pokemon game in at least 5 years, don't own a switch, or remotely care about the "drama and controversy" surrounding Swords/Shield. Yet i have passingly seen these threads for weeks now, and they all read the same fucking way.

OP has chosen to die on this hill, and to that end has tried with every post to reiterate the same damn perspective that they so adamantly refuse to allow people to suggest otherwise to.

It's perfectly okay to have an opinion, and stick to it. It's also fine to debate, and challenge others perspective. But even the best debaters know that not everyone's opinion can be changed, no matter how hard they try.

The issue everyone has with you isn't your stance you're taking, but rather your stubbornness in trying to sandbag any sort of civil discourse, or discussion. That, and you keep trying to phrase these arguments with loaded wording to try and twist the conversation in favor of your argument. People don't like it when you do that.

If you truly want bygones to be bygones then just let people have their opinions on the matter, and they'll let you have your own on it too.

Lastly, you need to either build some thicker skin, or just take a step back from this conversation. One way or the other it'll save you far more headache than trying to keep this going as it has been for weeks now.

Ultimately, you shouldn't feel the need to defend the game at all. That is the root of the problem, that you interpret an attack on the game as an attack on yourself, personally, and you feel the need to rebuff. But its just another product at the end of the day, you either buy it or don't, the game doesn't need defending.

We don't really have any stakes on the game itself beyond merely being a fan so taking the whole thing as personally as you do is really just wasted energy.

To draw a comparison, this behavior reminds me of some of the most fervent members of some of the more popular shipping fandoms. For whatever reason people get attached to certain ships to the point were they perceive any attack on their ship as an attack on themselves and wage large shipping wars to defend them.

Dude you made multiple threads about this damn game already. Yeah you “contributed” to the site but that doesn’t excuse you from the fact that you keep sperging out about a damn game that released months ago and it’s controversy died down months ago as well.

Just drop this entire situation dude, it’s like beating a dead horse.

Just here to say regardless of the actual topic this is horrible if you were writing a genuine apology
it reads as completely backhanded. The tone of the entire thing is "I'm such a martyr who did nothing wrong for dealing with you horrible people, sorry if that offends you".

Just drop this entire situation dude, it’s like beating a dead horse.

To quote a Sunday story:

"[Sticks and stones] Will break my bones but words…well words will hurt me in ways that are deep, hard to heal, and often times invisible.

My bones will knit together. My bruises will disappear. The blood can be staunched.

Words can cut much deeper than my skin, deeper than my viscera. Words can drive deep into my soul. Words can change my view of myself, my view of the world, my thinking of what’s possible.

And words can light up a room, open possibilities, create change, and make a difference.

Words matter. Words are power. Words aren’t benign. Words can be beneficent or malevolent. Before you spit your words out…maybe you should taste them first. Maybe you should gauge how they are going to land. Once spoken you can’t take them back. Like a rock leaving your hand, once those words leave your lips the course is set.

You are in charge of what you say. And you know, in your heart of hearts, whether those words will uplift or drive down their recipient. Choose to uplift or choose nothing at all".

While I'm grateful that the controversy died down, I'm still mentally scarred by how me and other SwSh fans were treated. It's not something I personally forgive so easily. Like I said before, this was the first time I had my own name used against me – it was the first REAL insult that hit me hard. I may not have shown it in my original reply to that insult, but I was furious.

I get why that insult was made. I made a suggestion that Pun didn't agree with. But it didn't need to be said at all. If they wanted to disagree, then they could've been more respectful about it. And yet, I was "Kuntsuta" in their eyes for going against their philosophy.

However, you are right in that I've been beating a dead horse. I wrote the original post to address that, explaining my motivation for doing so. Even though the insult emotionally scarred me, I'm not mad anymore. If I'm still "Kuntsuta" to Pun (or anyone else), then so be it. I have a name that can be twisted into a slang. But let this be clear to you: I made this forum to move on, not to continue beating that dead horse. Goodbye.

My apology IS genuine, but you completely missed the point as to why I made it. I didn't offend people FOR defending a game – I offended people in the WAY that I defended it. I was rude to other people's opinions because one guy happened to give me my first real insult. That's why I'm apologizing. I shouldn't have reacted in the way that I did.

anon: makes genuine apology
some losers on a meme site: Dude will you shut up already? No one cares anymore!

Very wholesome, Reddit.
