Avatar Editing

This isn't the first time I suggested this and obviously I'm not the only one to think of it but I really really think this site needs to redesign how it uses avatars. I always get dismissed with "edit it yourself" but that's not always an option for everyone and can get rather tedious. No other website I've used has had the issue where most jpg images get compressed and doesn't allow you to crop it when you're uploading it.

Sure avatars aren't a vital site feature but if avatars are a function might as well make them work. It'd be really helpful if this site's avatars were standardized to be like other big sites to where jpgs aren't compressed and you can crop it without a separate editor. Sure it's just aesthetic but every user has the function, you see them everywhere, seems like an aesthetic just as important as any to give some attention to.

Yeah, it really seems like a minor thing but it would be a neat feature to have, it could also include a preview of how it'll look in the forums/comment section/profile, it will probably never happen, but I'm just throwing that out there

By the way, what's the optimal size for a profile image in this site?

300×300 (pixels) is what you're gonna get as your picture, which is then scaled up/down for things like profiles and forum avatars. Profile pages show 200×200, and the forums give us 50×50. For example, KYM has these versions of my profile image stored:

https://i.kym-cdn.com/profiles/icons/big/000/116/140/bcb.gif (300×300)

https://i.kym-cdn.com/profiles/icons/original/000/116/140/bcb.gif (213×213, this is the image I uploaded. For a profile picture like Shijo's this will be much larger.)

https://i.kym-cdn.com/profiles/icons/medium/000/116/140/bcb.gif (100×100)

https://i.kym-cdn.com/profiles/icons/small/000/116/140/bcb.gif (50×50)

https://i.kym-cdn.com/profiles/icons/tiny/000/116/140/bcb.gif (20×20)
These are all created automatically and used around the site. The only exception is what's displayed on your profile image itself, which is just the big one stuffed into a box. If you want to know what it will look like, scale your image down to these resolutions.
If anyone knows of any other resolutions KYM keeps it'd be nice to know, just as a reference.

EDIT: And to answer your other question, if you really need a quick profile image editor, you can run pictures through programs like Skype, and track down where it saves your new profile pictures. I still highly recommend learning how to properly crop and format images, you can even use free online tools like Paint.net

^ Thank you very much, I do know the basics of image editing, at times it just looks fine on my profile but all pixelated on forums that's why I asked

Damn I still love that gif
