What about that when you're going to add a comment on a trending entry that has been inactive for some time, a message would appear above the comment box:

"The reason this entry is trending is because someone commented on it."

May reduce "why is this trending?" comments.

Rather than explain why entries trend so suddenly, I think the trigger for the "trending" status should be made a bit higher. For example, if 3 or more comments on an entry are made during a single day, that should make the entry trend. With just one comment making the entry trend, it can be compared to necro-bumping a thread on a forum.

May reduce “why is this trending?” comments.

Perhaps, but it won't stop people from making trend an entry on purpose. In fact, I'm sure it's going to have the exact opposite effect.

Personally I prefer raising the number of comments necessary to make an entry trend than putting a really obvious message.

The comment isn't that dominant anymore. If anything, I fear adding such a message would cause trolling.

Imo, based on what trending implies, the bar should have entries appear based on new views and not comments.

Would fix the "Why is this trending?" issue as well as an added bonus.
