2023 is also the 30th anniversary of the franchise, and given all the funky time stuff in the last couple of games it's probably not surprising the latest game is going to be a reboot. No official gameplay just yet but it'll likely be either at next week's PlayStation Showcase or during Summer Games Fest.

What's up with all these reboots and stuff being named as if to pretend that they're the original game?
Are they actively trying to make it harder to have a conversation about individual entries in the franchise? Trying to force people to ask when someone says "Mortal Kombat 1" whether they're talking about the actual first game or this new game whose title happens to be exactly what they said?

From the perspective of the devs (or whomever) I get the intent is it's trying to indicate this is a "new beginning" for the IP, but yeah it can be annoyingly confusing at times. I know Battlefield 1's reasoning is the "1" really referred to the fact the game is set during World War 1, but that's like the one exception. For Xbox it was deemed weird their eighth gen console was called "Xbox One" with the reasoning being they wanted the console to be seen as an "all-in-one entertainment device" (the reason launch models came with Kinect was because they wanted people to use it more as a hands-free remote than anything), so now most everyone just started calling the original Xbox from 2001 "Xbox OG."
I'm curious how Raiden's gameplay will come in to play, now that Liu Kang has what he had.
I just hope they just pull a SF6 and evolve the movesets instead of split them again like the variations.
