Dragon Quest creator gives interview where it sounds like he complained about "woke Westerners," but the show he did the interview with says the translations are inaccurate

The source has both the supposed original translations that are being called "inaccurate" and a rough translation by the show that conducted the interview stating that Horii's words have been mistranslated, taken out of context, and/or cut off.

I think to know for sure what Horii is saying and/or trying to convey we need an independent translator who will keep things completely neutral, as it sounds as if Horii's words might have been altered in order to make it sounds like Horii is "anti woke."

Thereā€™s some interesting discussion about religion and age ratings here.(Which I imagine will be ignored by some people). Although interestingly, Torishima mentions that ā€œThere are a few things that absolutely must not be doneā€. Iā€™m curious what he means by that.

Funnily enough, thereā€™s quite a lot of Western video games that get censored in Japan as well, even M rated ones(Although they do censor their own games as well. For example, Resident Evil games are frequently censored in Japan, but not the US.

I also remember recently that an EA employee was annoyed with the Japanese rating board for banning the Dead Space Remake while allowing Stellar Blade, despite both games supposedly having similar levels of gore. Of course, with both Stellar Blade and EA being controversy magnets, you can imagine the discussion that came from this.

I suppose different countries having different cultures as well as different ratings boards will just inevitably cause these kinds of problems, and Iā€™m not sure thereā€™s a real solution to that.

It seems like they are more confused on how culture outside of Japan has developed and still believe it is the Christian Conservative types influencing these kinds of changes, in spite the fact their grip has significantly loosened compared to the 80s and 90s.

Regardless whose to blame, the context that he's not a fan that his game needs to be censored probably isn't mistranslated.
