Equestria Daily launching a Steven Universe site soon

Source I'm not a brony, so I have no clue what Equestria Daily is other than being a fan site. But it seems a lot of people are upset about this, and by people, I mean Tumblr. And since we all know the type of website Tumblr is, I would like a more neutral website to tell me what the fuss is about.

Equestria Daily is probably the primary hub for FIM news in terms of how long it's been around, its regular activity, having a set staff, it being safe for all audiences, etc. Others like 4chan//mlp/ and Horse News don't have the same combination. Equestria Daily has also gotten better about news in general over the years, so they're fairly reputable about checking sources or posting with caution.

I didn't know anything about it until you posted it, but I could imagine Tumblr doesn't like it, because Steven Universe is very feminist in its approach in the episodes I've seen. Tumblr also has a lot of radical feminist users and blogs who hate bronies in part due to many bronies' "anti-feminist" ideals.

So an offshoot of (large and successful) (anti-feminist site) becoming the de facto hub for (successful feminist cartoon) because there is no other hub site that can compare to it probably sets a lot of Tumblr's jimmies aflame.

Equestria Daily is actually a blog that dedicates itself to MLP:FiM news and fandom interests. They heavily feature popular or exemplary art, music, and fan videos. It was one of the first news sites to pop up back in the early days of the shows popularity, and one of the two still active today. The other is Derpy News. The Daily Oat shut down about two weeks ago. Equestria Daily still owns the market share of site visitors though, especially after devouring most of Everfree Network's visitors after its shut down late last year.

This will actually be Equestria Daily's second "expansion" in the past few months. Back in January, they launched Desu Daily[1], and it's primarily staff by previous Equestria Daily writers who either weren't a part of the MLP fandom anymore, or who had taken more of a background role in updating the site's news. They didn't expect it to take off quite like Equestria Daily did[2], but mainly it was a place where MLP & anime fans could find news quickly without having to go to different dedicated news sites. They feature the same style of news updates and art posts as Equestria Daily, but for a different theme.

I expect about the same for whatever they call the new Steven Universe site. You'll probably see art posts, fan videos and edits, fanfiction if it becomes popular enough, and every little bite sized bit of show update on their blog. Equestria Daily tries to stay out of drama topics or controversy, so if any weird shit happens, expect it to be glided over or ignored altogether.

Tumblr's problem with it seems to be that it's run by "Ew, Bronies". Thing is, most of the people who will be writing for it aren't really into MLP:FiM anymore, so their vitriol spewing doesn't have much merit. It's Tumblr though; facts don't matter when feelings are hurt.

This is honestly a really interesting thing to look into and discuss from a business standpoint. EQD has proven somewhat that a website dedicated to being a fandom hub, could become a mildly successful business venture. However, I always brushed the idea away as a one-off because of the nature of MLP, but if this goes well, it could prove that this might be a new, viable market that only now is being tapped into.

Of course, it's so niche, and so low-income that I doubt we'd see anyone doing it for the sole purpose of actually making money, besides, anyone who was would flounder as not caring would lead to less research and thus an inferior experience. There's not even any guarantee that this'll work out a second time. If it does though, and the idea catches on among other fandoms, it will be interesting to see. At the very least, it'd be more convenient.

It's interesting to see that EQD shows interest in launching sites that follow other fandoms. I've never been personally interested in browsing EQD myself despite being a brony, but they do have a very good reputation as "fandom journalists". I'd say it's pretty smart for the staff to be putting their eggs in more than one basket. If they have the skill and the manpower to do it, then they may as well do it.

AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH <3

EQD sure knows what I'm interested at :3 I don't give a hoot about Desu Daily, but from Equestria Daily to a Steven Universe daily? Yes please. I seriously love the show, and to hear that the fandom is big enough to earn a fandom journalist blog, I'd like to see all the deviations of the fans, especially if this is as big of a phenomena as mlp with all of its musicians, animators, great fanfic writers and fan artists, etc.

Regarding Tumblr. I actually haven't seen any ludicrous, extreme claim from a user in a while (or I've grown a tolerance to them for being a regular user on the site.) But regarding Steven Universe, There just might be some social justice drama; I saw a post from Tumblr complaining why were the crystal gems shaped like women when they in fact do not need to take a human form at all…

And he's absolutely right.

Knowing all the shitstorm that came out of the term 'brony,' I'd rather not go down that road. It's completely unnecessary.

Wow, "Gemtlemen" has to be the worst fandom name I have ever heard in my life. I thought "Fallers" for Gravity Falls was bad, but holy shit some people are actually trying to make Gemtlemen happen? I think Matt Burnett put it best, just be a fucking fan! We don't need these small groups of the fandom trying to make it "us vs. them". Jesus Christ.

I'm hearing echoes that there is a war brewing over this with the creation of (Steven Universe) Daily being the Zoe Quinn. I'm starting to see Tumblr posts and reblogs.

Is our dear Calpain going to bring about another GamerGate with his new site?

(I should also note that Calpain also helped John Joseco with the defunct Princess Molestia Tumblr which many feminists hated and were rumored to have helped shut down. If there is a growing "feud," then Calpain helping out with that Tumblr and then making an Steven Universe equivalent to Equestria Daily might be the cause or would fan the flames even more.)

Welp, that was over as quickly as it started.

I respect Calpain's decision that this project was bringing on more stress than it was worth, but I'm afraid that this is going to start a huge backlash from the brony side. It's not gonna be pretty. It's easy to blame Tumblr for this, but really this sort of toxicity has existed in fandoms long before Tumblr became the main breeding ground for it. Seen it happen once, seen it happen a thousand times. Fandoms just really suck the fun out of everything at times.

@ Island Sun

I don't think it needs an entry on its own. Just a mention. I already squeezed it into the main Steven Universe page under Impact. I think it's only right to have it on the MLP article too but we all know how chuck full of everything else that page is.

That sounds good, I would only suggest mentioning the role tumblr played in the whole thing

Welp, this Non-controversy was fun while it lasted

Calpain backing off most likely stopped the shitstorm from getting nastier, but that one announcement was enough to spark bad blood between the bronies and the SU fandom. It's going to last a while as evident by the lovely comment section of the Steven Universe page, and the stream of tumblr posts addressing the event.

From what I've seen, it's mostly people realizing this is just Tumblr being Tumblr. I haven't seen Bronies hare on the SU fandom and vise-versa yet.
EqD is a good website, something like that for the SU fandom would be doing it a favor, but Tumblrina toxicity ruins yet again.

So let me get this straight…

Only one day after the it's announcement, the SU fan news site was cancelled and SU will not be getting a fandom news site anymore…all because a bunch of SU fans on tumblr just bitched and whined it to death over the fact that the project was being made by the same guys who made another highly successful and reputable fansite: EqG

…cuz you know…EqG is a brone site…and that would mean teh nasty brones were gonna get their germs on SU….remove kebab

…sigh

Actually, yes.

Given the fandom and a small "sensitive" portion of the fandom, they didn't want the co-author of Princess Molestia championing the face of the budding Steven Universe fandom. I kinda get that. It's a bad looking start.

I would want Steven Universe to develop it's own niche away from the backs of other fandoms in the same way the MLP fandom did. Desu Daily is different, because anime is far more established, but it obviously is trying to pull from a brony-base, as Calpain explicitly stated he wanted to do. Steven Universe should make it's own influence without a banner on the biggest brony site on the web.

That said, I think Calpain should have just gone ahead with it. He needs to learn to ignore what people say. Even if they doxxed him, he's an upstanding doctoral student, and you can probably figure out who he is without much effort anyway. I also can't imagine he's afraid of being associated with porn, because he was open about his work with John Joseco. Free world, free internet.

But even now, I don't see why Steven Universe can't have its own news blog. Anyone can start one. Let people who like the show come to it on its own merit and not because it was pulling primarily from EqD.

A Steven Universe fan-site is starting to look like a really good idea. I'm seeing more and more SU all over; the fandom's getting big. Calpain could've fetched a pretty penny.
