About

Murray's "You're Laughing" refers to a series of snowclone memes based on a memorable quote said by the 2019 film Joker character Franklin Murray. Online, the quote has been altered in memes to condemn people laughing at various issues, with the meme usually used ironically.

Origin

On October 4th, 2019, American psychological thriller film Joker premiered in the United States.[1] In one scene of the film, character Murray Franklin, portrayed by Robert De Niro, condemns the main protagonist Joker for laughing at two policemen being critically injured as a result of the riots prompted by his actions.

Look what happened because of what you did, what it led to! There are riots out there! Two policemen are in critical condition and you're laughing. You're laughing. Someone was killed today because of what you did.

The exact origin of the format is unknown, but is presumed to be an unidentified Discord server. On December 24th, 2019, Twitter[2] user @nanoLenoC posted the first known post based on the quote, although the authorship of the joke is unconfirmed (shown below, left). The tweet did not received any significant traction. The format did not see significant spread online, until on January 9th, 2020, iFunny[3] user cluu reposted the meme (shown below, right), with the post receiving over 36,400 smiles in two weeks.

One of the best climactic scenes in a movie in my opinion, it perfectly captures the mood of the film and solidifies the one of the messages in the film: The mentally ill must be appropriately treated, or radically dire consequences will abruptly and violently afflict our society.

This combined with some of the other messages in the film such as "The truth is hard to com by." (with the media widely believing the Wayne Enterprises employees on the train were murdered when in fact, Arthur Fleck was simply defending himself from their possibly lethal and unwarranted beatdown and also with Fleck discovering his mother's psych ward documents showing that he may possibly not be Thomas Wayne's illegitimate son and that his mother and actual father may have horribly abused him, exasperating any pre-existing mental conditions he most likely inherited from his mother. ) and the message that people will rally behind anyone who breaks a mold while bringing an issue to light, even if unintentionally and that mascots move movements. (Fleck killing the Wayne Enterprises employees set off a widespread debate about class inequality, possible corruption and bias and other social issues that culminated in the protests and eventual riots at the climax of the film, with Fleck's clown persona becoming the universal mascot of the movements against said issues.)

He wasn't properly informed of self-defense laws, meaning he probably didn't know when to stop.

I'm not saying Fleck's right, but it's also worth noting that letting the third guy go might have bit him in the ass later. The trio did come across as the type to lie in court if they were ever on the short end of the stick for something.
