About

Angry Joe Budden refers to jokes made about rapper Joe Budden getting angry at rapper Lil Yachty on Complex's web series, "Everyday Struggle," when Lil Yachty claimed the message of his recent album cover was "to be happy." Budden's grouchy response to the claim sparked jokes on Twitter depicting Budden as an angry, crotchety old man who is out of touch with modern hip-hop.

Origin

On May 2nd, 2017, Complex uploaded an episode of "Everyday Struggle" in which Lil Yachty was the guest on a panel featuring DJ Academiks and Joe Budden to YouTube. [1] In the episode, Budden challenged Lil Yachty to explain the cover for his album Teenage Emotions that features him alongside a group of "outsider" teenagers such as an albino, a homosexual couple, and more (shown below).

Budden stated that when he saw the album cover, he felt "a bit jaded" and wondered what the message was. Lil Yachty responded the message is "to believe in yourself; to love yourself… I'm an outcast of the hip-hop game. These are all outcasts on this cover." Budden responded "That's bullshit," and further challenged Lil Yachty, "You are happy 24/7? That is a lie." That day, Complex tweeted the relevant clip from the episode (shown below).

Spread

Twitter quickly began mocking Budden's attitude in the interview, characterizing him as overly mad and a hip-hop purist who believes great hip-hop can only come out of strife. Three hours after Complex tweeted the clip, @AllDefDigital tweeted a clip casting Budden as a child having a temper tantrum, gaining over 17,000 retweets and 25,000 likes (shown below).

Over the following two days, many more Twitter users began joking about Budden's performance in the interview, some including references to the Running Joe Budden meme (shown below). The jokes were covered by Twitter Moments,[2] HipHopDX,[3] Ebony Magazine,[4] and more.

I don't listen to Lil Yachty or Joe Budden, but dude needs to chill. Why can't a rapper make a happy song? To me, I get the impression that rap is supposed to be the "realest" music genre, and while that means a lot of songs about depressing shit, it also means happy shit. The reason I love rap is because the artists are honest about themselves, what they've been through, and how they feel. If Lil Yachty feels happy when he goes to the studio, let the man write a happy song dammit.
