Anxiety is a character from the upcoming Pixar animation sequel Inside Out 2. Anxiety, who will be voiced by American actress Maya Hawke, was first introduced in a trailer in early November 2023 and is one of the new emotions that will be central in the film. Anxiety's reveal quickly inspired fan art and memes on X / Twitter and TikTok.

Origin

On November 8th, 2023, Pixar revealed the first teaser trailer for the upcoming Inside Out 2 movie, a sequel to the 2015 animated film Inside Out. The trailer (shown below) introduces Anxiety, one of the new emotions that'll cause havoc in the headquarters of Riley Andersen's mind, who now is a 13-year-old teen. In less than a day, the video amassed over 2.8 million views and 139,000 comments on YouTube.[1]

In the following hours after the trailer's release, memes and humorous fan art of Anxiety went viral on X. For example, on November 9th, 2023, X[2] user @paulswhtn posted a video of rapper Jay-Z hugging a friend paired with the caption "Sadness and Anxiety linking up in Inside Out 2." The post (shown below) amassed more than 56,000 views and 4,200 likes in a few hours.

The character also inspired numerous drawings and fan art online. For instance, on November 9th, X[3] user @coutoartdump posted a drawing of Anxiety being asphyxiated (shown below, left), which garnered over 31,000 likes and 3,800 retweets in a few hours. On the same day, DeviantArt[4] user Pizza731 uploaded fan art of the character (shown below, right), amassing more than 750 views and 17 favorites in a few hours.

The whole point of the original movie was that emotions could work together to create deeper, more complex feelings. The characters were based on the six basic emotions: happiness (joy), sadness, anger, fear, disgust, and surprise. Surprise was deemed too similar to fear so that's why it didn't become a character.
I'm certainly intrigued about how they'll handle it since it seemed clear that adults in the first movie still had the same five emotions. Will they be "temporary" and eventually fuse with the main ones?

Inside Out is one of my favorite Pixar movies and I really hope they don't ruin it (although my faith in modern Pixar is practically non-existent).
