About
A New Emotion, also known as First Look at Inside Out's New Emotion Character refers to a series of exploitable memes using the catchphrase "first look at Inside Out's new emotion" over comedic, memetic images unrelated to Inside Out 2's actual new emotion, Anxiety, portraying the shown image as the new emotion. The earliest example of the meme was posted to X, formerly Twitter, in mid-November 2023 and inspired new variations over the course of the month.
Origin
On November 8th, 2023, the first trailer for the animated movie Inside Out 2 was released, revealing the emotion "Anxiety" as a new character. Media outlets and social media accounts began reporting on the new character over the following days. For example, on November 9th, X[1] user @DisneyAPromos posted a screenshot of Anxiety, writing, "First look at Anxiety, one of the new emotions of ‘INSIDE OUT 2’" garnering over 6,300 likes in a week.
On November 10th, X[2] user @_shutupyouugly posted a parody post revealing rapper Cupcakke as the new emotion, writing, "First look of the new emotion 'HORNKNEE,' played by the American rapper CupcakKe, for the upcoming Inside Out 2," gaining no interactions but marking the earliest known version of the meme. On November 12th, Instagram[3] user inzanelyrejected_denied posted a similar meme using an image of the sitting wolf meme as the new emotion, garnering over 2,400 likes in four days (shown below).
Spread
The sitting wolf version of the meme gained viral spread. On November 13th, 2023, it was reposted by Instagram[4][5] users needless.mp4 and zuccccccccccc, garnering over 137,000 and a million likes respectively in three days. That day, X[6] user @raspberhrriies posted a new version of the meme using a Snoopy doll to represent the new emotion, garnering over 7,500 likes in three days (shown below, left). On the same day, Instagram[7] user bimboheadrest posted a version of the meme using the bimbo picks up book image, garnering over 2,000 likes in the same span of time (shown below, right).
