On July 31st, 2020, Nella Rose[1] uploaded a video to her YouTube channel talking about shopping online (shown below). At 5:16 in the video, Rose says the phrase, "Are you not ashamed of yourself? Are you not embarrassed? This is embarrassing." The video garnered over 229 thousand views in just over two months.

On August 21st, 2020, TikToker theeserena[2] uploaded a video with the on-screen caption, "Colleges when they see my results at enrolment day," accompanied by an original sound of Nella Rose speaking the titular phrase (shown below). The video gained over 109 thousand views and 11 thousand likes in just over a month.

The trend caught on in mid-September, with users applying the sound to a variety of relatable and embarrassing situations. On September 10th, theeserena made another video with the sound, this time garnering over 1.6 million views and 314 thousand likes in under a month (shown below, left). On September 13th, TikToker nicoledaliel[3] uploaded a version of the trend, gaining over 2 million views and 423 thousand likes as of October 2nd (shown below, right).

On September 20th, YouTuber Clout Challenge uploaded a compilation of the trend to the platform, garnering over 6,400 views in a week.[4] On September 26th, social media star Tana Mongeau[5] uploaded a version of the trend, gaining over 1.9 million views in six days. On October 1st, StayHipp published an article about it.[6] As of October 2nd, the sound has been used over 22.6 thousand times on TikTok.
