Overview

Asteroid YR4 2032 Impact, also known as Meteor Hitting Earth In 2032, refers to an asteroid (named YR4) identified by NASA scientists in late 2024. In February 2025, scientists calculated that the odds of the asteroid hitting the earth are 2.3 percent, marking the second time in known history that an asteroid's impact risk has crossed a 1 percent chance. Memes and jokes about asteroid YR4 and its projected impact path began making the rounds in early 2025.

Background

On December 27th, 2024, astronomers announced their discovery of asteroid 2024 YR4, measuring approximately 50 to 90 meters in diameter. Initial calculations indicated a 0.096 percent (1 in 1,040) chance of impacting Earth on December 22, 2032.[1] By January 30th, 2025, this probability increased to 1.2 percent (1 in 83), prompting the United Nations to activate the Planetary Security Protocol for the first time.[2]

Developments

As of February 2025, further observations have refined the impact probability to 2.3 percent (1 in 43). The European Space Agency's Near-Earth Object Coordination Centre continues to monitor the asteroid's trajectory, noting that the risk corridor spans from the Pacific Ocean to parts of South America, the Atlantic, Africa, and Asia.[3] This development marked the second time that an asteroid’s impact risk has reached greater than a 1 percent chance.

Fortunately, this thing is just city-killing size, not planet-killing.

Space agencies internationally have developed a lot of different measures they can take once the asteroid is more in-range and if it has a higher probability to hit the earth. (Most likely a coordinated effort will be made to use each of these methods in succession to give us the greatest odds)

Nuke it: self-explainatory, would reduce the mass of the asteroid and potentially steer it away from earth- downside is that it could leave a dense and irradiated asteroid core still heading to Earth

Drill into it and explode it like that one movie: Same as above, may leave irradiated asteroid debris in a scattershot towards earth.

Slingshot the ISS out of orbit on a collision course. (I think they fired the guy who came up with this one)

Attach thrusters and alter the trajectory.

Attach solar sails and alter the trajectory.

And my favorite: just paint one side white. Depending on how the asteroid is rotating, the solar radiation will reflect off the white side more, pushing the asteroid off the original course and potentially away from Earth.
