About
Bikko is a character referenced and adopted by various imageboards such as 4chan, gurochan, and 420chan. Though originally appearing in an obscure Comiket one shot from 2004 called "Kesson Shoujo," her popularity in the west primarily came from the spread of images and fanart of her on different websites, where users were left clueless to what her actual origins were.
Origin
Bikko/ビっ子 is depicted as missing her left leg and her right eye while sporting a two-toned white and black bob cut. She is also the vocalist and lead guitarist of a punk band. Bikko is also partial to smoking the now discontinued Cherry[3] brand cigarettes. She first appeared in a blog post in 2004 by Japanese illustrator Yoshida On[1] (aka ROMANTIC FOOL since 1995). She was set to debut in a collaborative comic named "Kesson Shoujo/欠損少女" (Damaged Girl) featuring another illustrator called Rakugaki-san[2].
Bikko's illustrations began circulating around Japanese imageboards such as 2ch and Futaba Channel. Users were interested in Bikko and her origins and started searching for clues to no avail. After noticing Bikko's popularity online, Yoshida On posted on his blog talking about Bikko and her origins. He also stated that he didn't actually own a copy of Kesson Shoujo himself despite being the author.
The Kesson Shoujo doujin was a limited local print. This made the book extremely rare, especially with all the demand it gained online. There were rumors of some stores listing it at ridiculous prices. Up to now, no clear scans of the doujin have been discovered.
Spread
The first recorded attempt at an English Bikko Thread was on gurochan. The thread started on September 15, 2005. Uncharacteristically, users did not appreciate all the Rule 34 that appeared on the thread.
In 420chan, she was adopted as a "net character" and turned in to the mascot of the late /smoke/ board. She was recognized as one of the three drug waifus on the site along with TCC-tan, the site's main mascot, and Yakui-tan, a maid addicted to prescription pills.
