About

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a 2025 turn-based RPG video game developed by Sandfall Interactive and published by Kepler Interactive. The dark fantasy game follows volunteers of Expedition 33, a group of individuals who set out to destroy the Paintress, a being who annually slays people above an ever-decreasing age. The RPG garnered positive reviews from critics and players after its April 2025 launch, leading to online discussions, viral clips, memes and fan art praising its unique narrative and gameplay.

History

On June 10th, 2024, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33[1] was revealed during a State of Play Sony livestream, explaining that the turn-based RPG is inspired by the lavish art and culture of France’s Belle Époque. The trailer[2] (seen below) amassed over 862,000 views and 26,000 likes in a year.

The game was released on April 24th, 2025, available for PC and the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles.

Reception

As of April 27th, 2025, Clair Obscur received a 92 score on Metacritic[3] based on 63 critic reviews.

On April 23rd, 2025, IGN[4] uploaded a review video of the RPG, giving it a 9 out of 10 score, writing that the game's "creative turn-based combat system is fantastic," keeping players engaged while "impressive visual flourishes bring it all together." The video (seen below) received more than 542,000 views and 9,900 likes in four days.

Online Presence

Following its launch in late April 2025, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 sparked significant discussions and memes on social media as it trended across numerous social media platforms and received praise.

For instance, on April 26th, 2025, X[5] user @MischiefsYT praised the American actor Charlie Cox's performance in the game as the character Gustave. The tweet amassed more than 813,000 views and 26,000 likes in a day.

Mischief @MischiefsYT Charlie Cox honestly isn't getting nearly enough praise for his performance in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. He absolutely killed it as Gustave and is by far my favourite character in the game. Absolutely insane to me that this was essentially his first voice acting job

On the same day, TikTok[6] user @dandmart uploaded a fan edit video of the game, which received roughly 86,000 plays and 8,300 likes in a day.
