Bill Nye Launch Sign is a photoshop meme based on an image tweeted by Bill Nye in which he is shown holding a white sign toward the camera announcing a chance to join him for the launch of the Space X Falcon Heavy rocket. Since its upload via Nye's official Twitter account in mid-October 2017, the image has been turned into an exploitable template for online parodies.
Origin
On October 19th, 2017, Bill Nye tweeted [1] a picture of himself holding a sign that reads, "LAST CHANCE FOR LUNCH AND LAUNCH!" He captioned the tweet, "Itβs your final chance to join me for the launch of Falcon Heavy, the most powerful rocket in the world. Carry onβ¦" The tweet (shown below) received more than 120 retweets and 1,100 likes in less than three weeks.
Spread
That day, Redditor [2] Bat Bennis posted the picture in the subreddit MemeEconomy. Within two weeks, the post received more than 80 points (96% upvoted). The following day, the image was posted again, however, this time the sign read "Rick and Morty causes cancer" (shown below, left).[3]
On October 23rd, Instagram user @dolanspoptarts posted the picture with the caption "when that one person you don't like talks" and the sign reading "nobody cares about what you have to say." The post (shown below, center) received more than 50 likes in one week.
The following day, Imgur user ToSleepPerchanceToMeme posted the picture with the sign "Pee is stored in the ball." [5] The post (shown below, right) received more than 530 views in less than two weeks.
