About

Binod refers to a spammed comment frequently posted by YouTuber Binod Tharu who is known for frequently commenting on videos with only their first name. After the Indian YouTube channel Slayy Point posted the video “Why Indian Comments Section is Garbage (BINOD)” in mid-July 2020, pointing out Binod Tharu’s comments, other users began using the word as a form of copypasta on a number of platforms, particularly in YouTube comment sections. The hashtag “#Binod” eventually trended on Twitter in early August 2020 and was referenced in a number of memes elsewhere online.

Origin

On July 15th, 2020, YouTube[1] channel Slayy Point posted the video “Why Indian Comments Section is Garbage (BINOD),” where they discussed bizarre comments left by users on their videos. About 30 seconds into the video (seen below), Abhyudaya Mohan shows a screenshot of user Binod Tharu who posts only their first name in the comment sections below the channel’s videos. Slayy Point then presented a series of parody situations where “Binod” was the answer to every question asked.

After the video discussed Binod, other Indian YouTubers noticed the word being used in their own comment sections, and it quickly became a trend on YouTube. In August, #Binod trended on Twitter and appeared in numerous memes. One such example (shown below) was posted by Twitter[2] user epic_meme00 on August 6th, who used a reaction image that translates to “Who is he? Where did he come from?” The meme received over 620 likes and 162 comments and retweets in four days.
