Brexit Photoshopped Pictures refers to a series of photoshopped screencaps and other means of media from various pop culture references which portray the status of the United Kingdom (UK) leaving the European Union (EU) using pictures and flags of the UK, the EU, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to convey situations relating to Brexit.
Origin
The United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union on June 23rd, 2016 where 52% of the population voted to Leave with 48% voting to Remain. Ever since then, the UK has took part in negotiations with the EU to prepare for the UK's eventual departure to leave the EU.
Spread
After the referendum, many users and artists started creating portrayed by Brexit memes from television shows, and films by photoshopping flags or pictures relating to the situations of a no-deal Brexit, a potential second Scottish independence referendum and others.
Television shows that have been influenced in these memes include The Simpsons, Family Guy, SpongeBob SquarePants, Totally Spies and Ed, Edd and Eddy. Films that have been influenced in the memes include Tangled and Braveheart . Comics that have been influenced in the memes are Polandball and Oor Wullie.
European Union vs. the United Kingdom
Several of the flag memes relate to the subject of the relationship between the EU and the UK and the tensions between them.
Second Scottish independence referendum
Despite the whole of the UK voting to leave, every area in Scotland voted to remain. Due to this, there was debate whether a second independence referendum would be held. Many users had created memes relating to the case of Scottish independence with the British and Scottish flags being photoshopped on screenshots of things relating to pop culture.
Ireland, the UK and the EU
Twitter account Irish Simpsons Fans (@iresimpsonsfans) posted various of flag picture memes over screencaps of several Simpsons episodes in reaction to the developments of the Brexit negotiations and votes in the UK.
