About

Car Insurance Fraud Dash Cam Video refers to a viral video showing an alleged insurance scam attempt after a dash cam video showed a driver purposely backing his car into a woman's vehicle. The incident occurred in mid-October 2024 in Queens, New York, gaining viral attention on the internet in the following days, as more information about the scam's perpetrators surfaced online.

Origin

On October 16th, 2024, TikTok[1] user @ashpianatasha4 got involved in a road collision involving her car and another vehicle captured on dash cam video, which she later posted on her TikTok account on October 18th, 2024, alleging the accident was an "Insurance fraud attempt," writing on the caption they cut her off and "slammed on the brakes coming to a full stop hoping I would hit them. I did not hit their car and because of that they reversed into my car for collision and acted as if they were injured while coming out of their vehicle." The video (seen below) shows the dash cam footage of the front of her car and the alleged culprits reversing their car until it hits the woman's vehicle. The post amassed over 68 million plays and 6 million likes in a week.

@ashpianatasha4 Insurance fraud attempt in Queens, NY 10-16-2024 PART 1 I was driving in the left lane of the Belt Parkway going East bound towards the Southern State Parkway. The silver Honda (LBB 8917) was in the middle lane, and they cut me off and slammed on the brakes coming to a full stop hoping I would hit them. I did not hit their car and because of that they reversed into my car for collision and acted as if they were injured while coming out of their vehicle. I believe the intention was to say I hit their car for insurance fraud purposes. They had a tarp covering the rear windshield which fell off once they hit my car. You can see the driver is a male wearing a hat and you can see him switching to the passenger seat as well as the movement of the car before anyone gets out. The first three passengers exit the car pretending to be hurt, while the fourth passenger who was driving slips out through the passenger seat and gets into a second vehicle. That second vehicle was a red KIA SUV (KJH 3340) which was following me from behind and keeping distance so they wouldn't slam into me. The red KIA drove around and picked up the driver to get away. The remaining three people’s demeanor changed once one of them noticed the dashcam. They only came out of the car with their phones ready to record the damage to both cars. They were quick to ask for my insurance and quickly left after the exchange. I called the police at the time of the incident and reported it as an accident, and the police told me they no longer go to an accident if no one is injured and they are willing to exchange information. I did not realize at the time that the driver switched and left in another car or that it was a set-up as I was driving by myself, and everything happened so fast. #queensny #car #caraccident #exposed #newyork #brooklynny @nbcnews @abcnews @nypd @geico @allstate @pix11ny ♬ original sound – Ashpia Natasha

The woman in the car, Ashpia Natasha, later told Good Morning America[2] on October 21st, 2024, that the incident involving her car and another vehicle was probably a setup for insurance fraud. The video (seen below) garnered over 250,000 views and 2,800 likes in three days.

Spread

The insurance fraud dash cam video quickly spread online, spawning discussions of other common car insurance scams and memes related to the alleged perpetrators of the viral video. For instance, on October 23rd, 2024, the Instagram[3] meme page @longislandmemess posted a video showing the alleged car used in the insurance fraud collision (seen below) with its windows broken and a cardboard writing "rats" on the car's back window. The video received more than 1 million views and 30,000 likes in a day.

X users also posted memes using still images of the dash cam video. For example, on October 23rd, 2024, X[4] user @Motabhai012 posted a screenshot showing the individuals inside the car that reversed on the woman's vehicle (seen below), captioning the image with "The moment he realized they’re going to jail." The post received roughly 2,300 likes and 39 reposts in a day.

@whiteyjon Part 2: Insurance fraud attempt in Queens, NY . 10-16-2024 POLICE CALL . Hi everyone, please read the caption from my original post to see full story. I called the police at the time of the incident but as I mentioned previously, I did not know it was a set-up. I did know it was sketchy but as I was driving by myself, I did not want to put myself in more danger. That is also why I did not tell them about my dash cam. I saw what I saw and knew that if I'm right, I won't be at fault. . . Also, I have included the dash cam I use as under the video. if you would like to purchase one. It comes with front and rear view camera. #viral #fyp #dashcam #insurance #TikTokShop ♬ original sound – whitey jon✨️
