About
Cogs Fluid is a fluid substance with slime-like properties created by Twitter user John Cogs, who shared footage of it in April 2020. In May 2023, the Cogs Fluid went viral on Twitter and became the subject of jokes and memes after an account shared several videos of it.
Origin
On April 26th, 2020, Twitter[1] user and self-proclaimed scientist John Cogs (@JohnCogs5) posted a video in which he pours an unknown white liquid into a cup filled with tea, with the liquid forming a slime-like substance and overflowing into the sink (shown below). In the tweet, Cogs called the liquid "cogs fluid" and expressed hope that it would change the world. Assisted by its viral spread in May 2023, the tweet accumulated over 1,400 retweets and 6,600 likes in three years.

In the following years, Cogs shared more images and videos of the substance on Twitter.[2] For example, on June 30th, 2022, Cogs shared a photograph in which he held a lump of the substance in his hand. The tweet (shown below) gained over 160 retweets and 630 likes in one year.
Spread
On May 21st, 2023, Twitter[3] user @greenTetra_ quote tweeted the original video of the liquid, commenting, "a marvelous fluid…" The tweet gained 19 retweets and over 440 likes in three days (shown below, left). Later that day, Twitter[4] user @yeenbruh shared two videos and a photograph of the substance from @JohnCogs5's account (shown below, right). The post received over 900 retweets and 8,700 likes in three days.
The viral spread of the post was followed by jokes and memes based on videos and photographs of the fluid. For example, on May 21st, Twitter[5] user @OzmaRacc posted a joke that garnered over 160 retweets and 920 likes in three days (shown below, left).
On May 23rd, 2023, @yeenbruh shared[6] an exchange between @JohnCogs5 and another user who posted a photograph of a batch of cogs fluid they made. The screenshot of the exchange (shown below, right) garnered over 1,400 retweets and 12,500 likes in one day.
Following the viral spread of the original cogs fluid video, @JohnCogs5 gained over 1,000 followers on Twitter[7] as of May 22nd and over 7,500 followers as of May 24th, 2023.
