Continue Forwards or Backwards? or Are You Moving Forwards or Backwards? refers to a hypothetical question that paints a situation in which the reader is penetrating someone while getting penetrated by someone else and asks them to choose whether they would prefer to move forward or backward, usually wording the phrasal template "You Are 8 Inches Deep Inside X While Y Is 16 Inches Deep Inside You. Which Route You Are Taking?" The trend was started by a viral Twitter / X post in June 2024 that offered a choice between actress Zendaya and basketball player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
Origin
On June 1st, 2024, X[1] / Twitter user @PlayoffShai2 described a hypothetical situation in which one has sexual intercourse with both actress Zendaya and basketball player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, penetrating the actress while getting penetrated by the player, and asked whether one would move forwards or backwards in that situation. The post (shown below) received over 8,900 reposts and 168,000 likes in one month. Later on the same day, X[2] user @PlayoffShai2 quoted the post, commenting, "18 minutes into Pride Month." The post (shown below, right) garnered over 8,900 reposts and 168,000 likes in the same period.
Spread
Starting on June 1st, 2024, the post was parodied in memes, with users replacing Zendaya and Shai with other people and characters.
For example, on June 1st, X[3] user @willsgardevoir offered a choice between anime characters Goku and Yoruichi that received over 580 reposts and 5,600 likes in one month (shown below, left). On June 3rd, Redditor Own_Valuable_5412 posted a Fallout: New Vegas meme that received over 2,700 upvotes in the /r/NewVegasMemes[4] subreddit in one month (shown below, right).
On July 9th, 2024, X[5] user @riptwobashiri posted an Elden Ring originally posted by an unknown Instagram account (shown below, left). The post received over 1,800 reposts and 3,200 likes in three days. On July 11th, X[6] user @oncloud_e posted a recaptioned version that received over 3,300 reposts and 4,800 likes in one day (shown below, right).
In the following days, the template saw more use on Instagram, X and Reddit.
