About
Cory in the House is an American television series broadcast on the Disney Channel from 2007 to 2008 as a spin-off of the Disney series That's So Raven, which focused on the exploits of the character Cory Baxter as he and his father take up residence in the White House. The series has since gained an ironic fandom online, including a running joke in which the series is erroneously referred to as an anime. Additionally, members of 4chan's /v/ (video games) board have attempted to get the Cory in the House Nintendo DS game a most-wanted FAQ page on GameFAQs.
History
A spin-off of the Disney series That's So Raven, Cory in the House was created by Dennis Rinsler and Marc Warren and originally aired on the Disney Channel from January 12th, 2007 to September 13th, 2008.[1] The show starred Kyle Massey reprising his role as Raven Baxter's younger brother Cory,[2] and revolved around Cory and his father Victor (portrayed by Rondell Sheridan) as they experience life living in the White House in Washington, D.C.[1]
Online Presence
GameFAQs and Metacritic Raids
The game and the show itself soon skyrocketed in popularity outside of the board when /v/ raided the site GameFAQs to make the Cory in the House the most wanted FAQ on the site[2] in late December 2013.[7] Though the game itself has was generally overlooked by gaming critics – its Metacritic page displays nothing more than two negative reviews from IGN and Da Gameboyz – users of /v/ and Reddit soon took to the Metacritic page to give the game a high user score, resulting in a 9.4 score (indicating "universal acclaim") based on over 200 positive reviews.[8] Additionally, the Amazon page for the DS game has over 30 five-star reviews.[9]
Fandom
Ironic appreciation of Cory in the House online dates back to a 2007 video titled "TOP 27 ANIME BOOBS," featuring an edited version of the Cory in the House theme song synced to the Crashman's theme from Mega Man 2, followed by a similar clip with Sonic the Hedgehog 2's Hill Top Zone music and the theme from the Disney Channel television series Phil of the Future. The video was subsequently deleted and reuploaded by user TheSaltySaltySalt on August 22, 2008.[3] The video eventually spawned a running joke involving referring to Cory in the House as an anime.
Cory in the House also became the source of tongue-in-cheek running gag on the 4chan board /v/ following the release of a video game for the Nintendo DS based on the series on April 15, 2008.[4] Photoshopped images of Cory and screenshots of the various dialogue screens from the game (particularly one of the character Sophie Martinez saying "Cory, you a busta") were widespread, while the game itself was constantly used as a way of trolling whenever the leak of a new game was asked and as a ironic response in "favorite videogame" threads.[5] The popularity of Cory in the House soon spread to Reddit, particularly to the /r/gaming and /r/askreddit subreddits.[5] A subreddit dedicated to the show also exists.[6]
