Star vs. the Forces of Evil is an American cartoon created by Daron Nefcy and produced by Disney Television Animation, which is centered around the adventures of Star Butterfly, a princess from an alternate dimension who has been sent to Earth by her parents after destroying their kingdom with a magic wand. The series began growing a significant fan following online after a special preview of the first episode was broadcast on the Disney Channel.
The show follows Star Butterfly (voiced by Eden Sher), the princess from the alternate dimension of Mewni who is given a magic wand on her 14th birthday. She couldn't handle its powers, setting the kingdom on fire within a day. In response, Star's parents decided to send their daughter to Earth so she can learn how to use her wand. She arrived in the town of Echo Creek to live with Marco Diaz (voiced by Adam McArthur) and his family while they fight against villains throughout the universe to protect the wand.
According to show creator Daron Nefcy, she initially began planning for the series when she was a fourth-grade student. The first designs of Star were created during her college years. At first, the series was about a girl who thought she had magic powers, but this was altered for the final version. The series was announced at the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con, and the first episode was premiered on January 18th, 2015 as a special preview. On February 23rd, 2015, another episode was released on WATCHDisneyXD.com. The series official premiered on March 30th, 2015 on DisneyXD.
Star vs. the Forces of Evil's first episode was well received, having 2.33 million viewers. The series currently has a 8.2/10 rating on IMDb, with over 4,800 reviews. On February 12th, 2015, a second season was announced due to the positive reception of the first episode. On March 4, 2016, and February 28th, 2017 the show was renewed for a third and fourth season, respectively.
The series gained a following on websites such as Tumblr, Reddit, Fanfiction.com and 4chan's /co/ board. Additionally, an official Wikia about the series was launched. As of December 4th, 2016, the online artist community DeviantART has over 10,000 submissions submitted under the keywords "star vs the forces of evil".
Trans Marco Theory
After it began airing, fans began to theorize that Marco Diaz, the second main character, is a transgender girl. On July 22, 2016, Tumblr user Breastforce created a master post of evidence that Marco is a trans girl, which gained over 10,000 notes in a year. She later created an updated version on March 1, 2017, which gathered over 3,000 notes in 4 months. The theory has gained a large following within the fandom.
