The trend is typically set to the opening notes of the song "Smalltown Boy" featuring Jimmy Somerville, with people showing off quintessential 80s club dance moves.
Origin
The song "Smalltown Boy" by Bronski Beat ft. Jimmy Somerville was released in May 1984, with the music video following the story of a young gay man who is forced to leave home (seen below).[1]
On April 29th, 2024, TikToker[2] @stargirltesfaye posted the earliest known video where someone asks their mom or dad to dance like they would in the 1980s to the aforementioned song, gathering over 18 million views and 1 million likes in two weeks (seen below).
