Dead Island is a video game, released on September 6, 2011. A huge amount of hype surrounded the game's release, partly because of the long wait before the game's release (it was originally announced at E3 2006, making it an example of vaporware), and partly because of the hugely popular trailer that preceded it.

As of March 16 2012, the trailer has had over 9 million views on YouTube. It features a family of three encountering a group of zombified hotel guests and staff in slow and reverse motion. While the trailer has drawn criticism because of its drawing heavily on the death of the young girl, it has also drawn universal acclaim for its atmospheric nature. The trailer is widely accepted to be one of the best video game trailers of all time.

However, the most popular part of the trailer was the haunting music that accompanied it, which apparently reduced many people to tears. This track eventually spread, being used in other videos to make them more emotionally 'hard-hitting'.

Many people were soon posting reaction videos to the trailer on youtube, the most popular of which, Geoff watches the Dead Island Announcement Trailer, has close to a million views. It features a father of a young girl watching the trailer for 15 seconds before closing the video, expressing anger at the people who made the trailer. Other videos of the same type have thousands of views each. Reaction videos to the trailer are especially popular because of the extremely emotional nature of the trailer, the idea being to try and go for as long as possible without crying.
