About
This meme, briefly popular in the Meme Queens of the 5Cs (Claremont Colleges[1]) Facebook group in late March and early April 2018, consists of absurdly lavish praise heaped upon, or other references to, the crude iPhone / Android mobile app "Dig Dog".[2] During this period, a craze for the app took over the 5Cs, which spawned and subsequently fed off of a flood of posts to the group.[3] After a few weeks, students grew tired of the posts and they subsided, but the episode remains notable for its intensity and is still referenced in group conversations.
The App
The app was released for iPhone (and, in the same month, Android[2]) on September 17, 2015[4], two and half years before it became a meme, and received no updates later than a week or so after its release.[4] Susan Tubb was listed as its creator[4] and BigBoat Games as the developer.[2]
In the game, the player taps on the screen to control a dog digging into the dirt. The goal is to collect as many gems, bones, and gold bars as one can before dying by hitting a rock.[2]
Sometime after the 2018 craze, the app was taken offline, but it is still available as an APK download.[5] An unrelated and much more popular Dig Dog game was released in 2019, obscuring much of the original game's online presence.[6]
Memes
Dozens of memes were shared to the closed Meme Queens of the 5Cs Facebook group[7] during the craze, with most garnering several dozen likes each.[8] These included many crossovers, such as with the popular The 5Cs as meme:
One student created his own computer game based on Dig Dog and Meme Queens.[9]
A Facebook account going by the nom de guerre "Digger McGee"[10] started commenting on Dig Dog posts with "I dig it!"
Students in a journalism class produced a video news report explaining the craze and interviewing some of the game's players:[3]
The intensity of Dig Dog memes spawned some parodying, such as by commenting on non-Dig Dog memes asking "Can someone explain the dig dog joke in this meme?"[11] A semi-serious backlash formed from those who did not find the meme funny, leading to somewhat of a battleground situation between supporters and detractors. This spawned its own class of memes:
