Draw X in Y's Style

Draw X in Y's style (Japanese: 〇〇の絵柄で〇〇を描く OR ○○の絵柄で○○描いてみた) is an illustration challenge on Twitter in which people draw a character they choose in the style of an artist or a media title designated by Shindanmaker. In late 2012, many Japanese online artists and senior professional mangakas jumped onto this parody illustration trend.

Origin

Around early April 2011, an unknown user submitted the Shindan page "Egara De Odaitter" (絵柄でお題ったー)^[1], which suggested to users to draw a waifu they input in a drawing style randomly chosen from 57 manga artists or popular media titles (shown below). Twitter users had played this Shindan nearly 200,000 times by August 2012, but their works were a few and seldom came into the spotlight.

Spread

Around early September 2012, this Shindan became popular on Twitter after several famous mangakas and illustrators played it. Their posts quickly spread to the SNS while being called the popular name taken from Shindan's message "Draw X in Y's style" (〇〇の絵柄で〇〇を描く OR ○○の絵柄で○○描いてみた) and received gallery pages on curation services.^[2][3] Among those early works, "Detective Conan in the Sazae-san style." by Takashi Shiina^[4] (shown below, left)^[5], "Steve Jobs in the Sazae-san style" by Miyuki Noma (野間美由紀)^[6] (below, center)^[7], and " Sakuya Ookochi (from Sensual Phrase^[8]) in the One Piece style" by Mayu Shinjo^[9] (below, right)^[10] spread widely and were featured on online news outlets.^[11][12][13] As a result, the Shindan page succeeded in adding nearly 500,000 hits by the end of that year and producing hundreds of illustrations by online artists.^[14]
